MY FAMILY TREE
family norms and culture is a heritage that is passed from one generation to another,
sometimes diverting from this culture is considered an act of betrayal to your family members
therefore understanding your family gives you a clear picture of who you are, your strength and
weakness basing on family historical background. Understanding our family history also gives us
a picture of what the society expects from us as per the history of our family, what we have to
deliver to the community that we exist in and the people around us, family history gives as a
chance to evaluate the dynamic transformations that have taken place in various generations
through which our families have passed to be where it is, it helps us understand our family norms
and culture and gives us a way on how to protect those norms and the family culture.
Coming from a family that believes in the culture of farm work, it has always given me
the urge to fight on and ensuring that food production is at the core of my family’s daily
activities that some of the family engage in such as business. In general my family has had a
great history from the days when my grandfather become a leading campaigner to end racism in
the manner in which the government was handling farmer of the white race that those of the
black race in this country, even though he and his wife only had two children, the family’s legacy
and influence has not changed, even though there have been many challenges to maintain this
legacy. My grandfather and his brother being the only children of my great grandfather knew the
importance of uniting as a family no matter the social disagreement that sometime arise because
of ideological differences. They still worked together and supported each other to maintain their
father and mother’s legacy in fighting for human rights at all cost. When grandfather’s brother
got married, his wife’s family become supportive of the family ideologies and his sons and
daughter have held unto this legacy up to day, a factor that has kept the entire family lineage
strong despite the expansion in the family. My grandfather on the other hand apart from striving
to maintain his father’s legacy, he also become a profound Agro business person who strive to
ensuring that his family stand strong and maintains a name that his father had in the society.
Since my great grandfathers time to date, my family has played a key role in the
preservation of our family’s heritage. This is done by making sure that from one generation to
another, they are being taught our family values and practices. This has seen our family grow
stronger generation by another and the same time being able to maintain the values that our
precedors wanted us to have. Despite the expansion of the family from my great grandfather’s
time to know, our family remains united and maintains good relations even in times of crisis,
which has facilitated the unity.
Everyone in my family who carries our blood is entitled for a share in the family
business, but since we cannot all lead, the sole responsibilities of organizing family gatherings
and unions is left to the sons of the family, first born sons for that matter, at this gatherings and
unions the family is able to decide on fundamental issues for the business and the family’s
existence. Our family also understands clearly the fact that a family that prays together stays
together, so being a family that was built on strong religion values this has enabled us carry on
well up to this far, thanks to God.
For over 100 years the culture of agro business has remained an inherited culture in the
family and any other business that we engage in are supported by Agriculture the main thing that
my great great grandfather valued most in his life and wished that it be passed from one
generation to another. Something that has maintained the family’s name.
Below is my family’s kingship diagram.
