Contrast Essay

The Writing Prompt:

Using point by point organization, write an essay comparing/contrasting

the excerpt from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Self-Reliance (p. 640) and

Brené Brown’s “Cultivating a Resilient Spirit” (p. 669). Both readings

focus on building self-awareness.

• Some possible points to consider:

o The theme

o The focus of each essay

o The writing style (the way something is written)

o The author’s diction (word choice)

o The author’s tone (attitude)

o Sentence fluency (flow and rhythm of sentences and phrases, sentence variety)

o The purpose of the author’s message

Requirements & Details: • Word count: 800-1000 • Maintain the third person voice. • Keep in mind that a well-developed paragraph is at least 5-10 sentences. You should have a distinct introduction, body paragraphs (minimum of 3) and conclusion.
