script of the play. The theatre communicates with its audience in multiple ways, through color, light, shape, movement, texture, sound, and spatial relationships to name a few. Each of these layers can be considered a "text" that you read and figure out the meaning of, just like you read words on the page for their literal and figurative meaning. For example, the color blue reads very differently than the color pink, and there are multiple social and cultural meanings attached to each.

Interpretation is the work of explaining the meaning of something. An interpretation expresses an understanding of a particular play or performance, and is influenced by one's experience and ideas about that work of art.

For this assignment, you are going to practice reading and interpreting the "texts" of the stage by looking at a production image. So rather than being able to rely on the playwright's language to create meaning, you are going to base your interpretation only on the visual elements that occupy the stage and make up the world of the play.

To aid you in your analysis, also review Dixon's "Thirty Ways to Understand a Play,"Preview the document especially #14 "Scenic Metaphors."

ORIGINAL POST: For your original post, write a 250-350 word paragraph that is a thorough interpretation and analysis of 2 of the 4 anonymous images provided below (make sure you state which image you are writing on). What can you conclude about the world of the play by looking only at an image?

Consider the following questions (some taken directly from Fuchs). Be as specific as you can about as many things as you can and support your ideas with evidence from the image.

Where is it?

When is it?

What is the “mood,” “tone,” and “feel” of this dramatic world?

What are the social and economic aspects of the world like?

What textures exist in the world and what might this mean?

What colors exist in the world and what might this mean?

What patterns exist in the world and what might this mean?

What other metaphors or meaning can you find in the physical world?

How do these elements relate to one another to create a cohesive whole?

FOLLOW-UP REPLY: Write a 100-150 word reply to your own post.

Read all of your classmates' posts and take into consideration what 2 of your classmates have said about one of the images that you also wrote on. In your follow-up reply of 100-150 words, articulate how your classmates' interpretations have deepened or challenged your own interpretation. Be sure to credit the classmates whose posts you are referring to.
