Rhetorical Analysis of an Argument Essay

For this assignment, you are to write an essay that analyzes or evaluates an article from the TCC database. In your analysis, you may examine the effectiveness of the author’s logic; the author’s use of logos, ethos, and pathos; the author’s tone; the author’s use of sources; of course, there are other elements you may want to consider as you analyze the rhetorical strategies within the primary text.

Analyze one of the articles I have uploaded to Canvas. You can locate the articles by clicking on the Assignment button and accessing the Analysis Essay Assignment and Material folder.

Please review the analyzing an argument power point presentation.

Important Reminders:

· Include at least one direct quote from the primary source but no more than three direct quotes.

· Include a Work Cited section at the end of your paper.

· Do not write in second person (e.g., you, your, imperative sentences).

MAKE SURE YOUR PAPER HAS A TITLE. YOUR TITLE IS NOT THE REWORDING OF THE PROMPT. YOUR TITLE SHOULD REFLECT YOUR THESIS, OR THE PREMISE OF YOUR ESSAY!!!!!!!

The Basic Structure of an Analysis Essay

Introduction (Length for this class: 1-3 paragraphs)

1. Summarize the primary text

2. Situate the reader in terms of the topic

3. Include a thesis statement that expresses a value or judgment

Body of essay (Length for this class: 4-5 paragraphs)

1. Develops the thesis

2. Examines many of the following questions (others may be considered.):

· What’s the author’s thesis (claim)? Is it logical?

· What’s the author’s purpose in writing this essay?

· How effective does the author present the claim and support that claim?

· Is the piece aimed at a particular audience? A neutral audience? Persons who are already sympathetic to the author’s point of view? A hostile audience?

· How does the author’s essay reflect the three appeals: logos, pathos, ethos?

· What’s the author’s tone, persona (voice)? Is it appropriate?

· What assumptions does the author make? Do I share them? If not, why not?

· Does the author ever confuse facts with beliefs or opinions?

· How convincing is the evidence?

· Are significant objections and counterevidence adequately discussed?

· To what extent has the author convinced me? Why? or Why not?

Possible organization pattern of paragraphs in the body section:

Identify a point from the primary text you want to analyze

Briefly explain the point to your reader

Offer your analysis / examination / evaluation of the point by discussing the primary author’s points and possibly offering your own examples

Transition to next point to be discussed

Conclusion (Length for this class: 1-2 paragraphs

1. Summarize the discussion

2. Briefly state your position on the topic (optional)

3. Bring closure to the topic

Again, please include a Works Cited section at the end of the paper.
