Technology Under Population

Why do people feel as if online dating is more efficient than meeting someone in person?

(ignore that i just needed to put something there). To this current date, the second most common

way people meet each other is through online dating sites and apps(applications). With their ease

of use, meeting people today is completely different than the way people used to communicate

and interact before the internet. Due to the internet's accessibility, it could also complicate trying

to start a relationship. Using them as a way to find love has changed the way we look at

communication between peers. Meaningless sex, depersonalized love, and the ease of finding

another sex partner is fueled by dating websites and is creating a lack of long-term relationships.

Meaningless sex is possible through sources like Tinder, where people can ‘like’ or

‘unlike’ someone based off their looks and their biographies they have written about themselves.

Due to online dating, men or women have been taken advantage of which is a contribute to

meaningless sex. Because of meaningless sex is becoming extremely common, it is causing

people to no longer fall in love with one another and having the chemistry between the couple

come off as invisible. As mentioned in the “Love me Tinder” article by Emily Witt, David

admitted in a note, “...several women have taken advantage of his comfort and confidence to use

me for sex and ask me to help them experience new things.” Instead, people are now using each

other to fulfill sexual desires and then never speaking again which is deteriorating the sole

purpose of love. Watching technology take over not only professions, but the idea of love, it can

eventually ruin the possibility of a significant other. This mindset is dragging and can result in

extreme unhealthy habits like depression or anxiety. These unstable habits could affect one’s

entire life span and potentially haunt them to the point where they can’t find love at all.

Love is extremely depersonalized when using these dating apps. Everyone’s first

connection is through a digital form like instant messaging for example. It is the first initial act

talking to the other person over social media. When meeting someone this way, one can portray

themselves as whoever they want to be which can also show them as a completely different

person. Meeting a fake or untrue profile of someone is not the most honest way to introduce

oneself for the first time. Although, in Amy Webb’s TED Talk, she mentions how she had made

multiple fake male profiles to perform market research that would enable her to create qualitative

and quantitative data sets. She created a very popular online profile and eventually found the

man she’d been looking for all along. If they ever decide to meet up, someone might be in for a

little bit of a surprise. Love is also depersonalized on these sites because everyone who uses

them met the same way, through the site. There are no longer unique stories behind “How did

you two meet?”. The answer “Online”, has become so popular, it doesn’t have many people

surprised. Hearing that people met on an app or dating website is an everyday occurrence.

Although finding love isn’t always easy, the idea behind cybersexism doesn’t do it justice

either. “The Internet made misogyny routine and sexual bullying easy, but first it did something

else. It gave women, girls and queer people space to speak to eachother without limits, across

borders, sharing stories and changing out reality”, Laurie Penny mentions. Women throughout

Landau 3

the world were spending majority of their time talking to another person without a visual of what

the person looked like and eventually led to the feminist revival of the mid-2000s.

With unpassionate sex, untouched love, and new sex partners at the touch of a finger,

because of dating applications, long term relationships are no longer common practice. Being

without anyone is so normal that people look down on relationships and look up to these sites. If

behavior like this continues, it will end family heredity and low population. Which can lead to

distinction of our species.
