Essay #3 - Comparison Essay Guidelines

Write a paper comparing and contrasting 2 works within your major. For example, advertising

majors may compare two advertisements; fashion design majors may compare garments

or fashion shows; film and animation students may compare films; audio majors may compare

songs or albums, and so forth. You may certainly choose a subject outside of your major.

There must be a strong basis of comparison between both works, and the works must be

approved by the instructor. Remember, you are comparing two specific works, or art objects, and not two artists.

Examples:

Films: The Hunger Games vs. Battle Royale

Albums: Eminem’s Kamikaze vs. Lil Wayne’s Carter V

Interactive Media: Limbo vs. Inside

Buildings: The Delano vs. The Mandarin Oriental

Fashion Shows: Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2017 vs. Spring 2018 Collections

In addition to the comparison essay, a ½ page proposal is due in Week 8. This will give me an

opportunity to approve/disapprove of the subjects(s), and to offer feedback for improvement

before the writing process begins.

Include the following:

a. What subjects you chose.

b. What the basis of comparison is.

c. Explanation of why you chose these subjects and how you plan to examine them.

Length:

4-5 pages (1000-1250 words)

Week 8: Proposal (digital copy in class)

Week 9: Rough Draft (digital copy in class)

Week 10: Final Draft (submission folder)
