Environmental Chemistry News Article Assignment
The Learning Objective for this assignment is for you to demonstrate that you can critically read and
analyze a news article about a topic from the course, and relate the contents of the article to the
chemistry you have learned.
You are to locate an article on the web consistent with the parameters given below. After reading the
article, you are to write a summary and analysis and post this on the Discussion Board in the appropriate
folder. You are to do this by a copy and paste process so that files do not need to be opened. Label each
section: Summary, Analysis. At the end of your text put the link for the rest of us to find the article.
Check to be sure that this works by pasting the URL in a new tab to confirm.
The second component of the assignment is for you to read some of your colleagues’ postings and write
a reply as described below. This will allow you to expand your knowledge while only finding 1 article
yourself!
Primary Posting:
The article must have been published in the last six months. It must be available to everyone in the class without paying or needing a password. It must be at least 400 words in length (you can copy and paste into Word to get a count). It must be related to the topic of that particular assignment. Your posting should be about half summary of the story and half analysis of the information as it
relates to our study in the course.
Your posting is to be at least 300 words.
Response Posting:
You are to reply to the posting of another student. Your reply should have your ideas about whether or not the article and primary posting meet
the criteria in the above section in terms of appropriateness and connection to the course
material.
Your reply is to be at least 100 words.
Be sure to follow the deadline given in the schedule. Points for late postings will be 10% per day late.
Rubric (Points):
Timeliness (3): Article published in the last 6 months earn 3 pts; earlier articles earn 0 pts. Length of Primary Post (5): ≥400 words earn 5 pts; >300 but <400 earn 3 pt; <300 earn 0 pts. Quality of the Summary (8): Accurate and comprehensive posts earn 8 pts; accurate but limited
description posts earn 5 points; inaccurate posts earn 0 points unless the error is minor.
Quality of the Analysis (9): Posts with a clear analysis which directly relates the article to course material earn 9 pts; posts with clear analysis but only minimal connection to course material
earn 6 pts; posts with unclear analysis and/or minimal connection to the course material earn 3
pts.
Length of Response Post (3): ≥100 words earn 3 pts; <100 words earns 0 pts. Quality of Response (7): Posts with a clear connection to the original post and the course
material earn 7 pts; posts with only modest connection to the original post or course material
earn 4 points; posts which do not make a clear connection to the primary post or course
material earn 0 pts.
