Of course his services were not as the previous tea girl. He would take so long to bring tea and would bring one thing at a time. Tea break was meant to be very short since we had a lot of customers to serve but since he was recruited we could spill the time stipulated for tea break.
We all decided to help him in improving situation. This was so because we made various assumptions. First we assumed that his services would be quite poor since he was a man as this task is perceived to be a women’s thing. We therefore thought that he would not change to the better and therefore we would serve tea for ourselves. We also assumed that he had not gone to school.
Our assumptions in the situation led us to take up roles that the man had been employed for. Were it not for the assumptions we would have helped him to get better in providing his services rather than taking up his roles as this did not help him in any way. We later learnt that our assumptions that he had not been to college were wrong. He had studied a course related to restaurant service only that he did not have experience.
