ENC 1102 – Week 10 Instructions
Essay 2 DUE: 3/21/2021
By now you should have read Hamlet (the play) and Hamlet (the RSC 2016 performance). I hope that by reading the play you felt better prepare to tackle the Royal Shakespeare Company’s take on this Shakespearean tragedy. There will be no Critical Response for Hamlet because we are ready to engage with Essay 2. For Essay 2 you will have three options to select from. Here they are. Option 1
- Write a critical / analytical essay based on the RSC 2018 Macbeth - You will base your essay on three themes you select from the production - Engage with how these themes are explored across the performance - As part of the conclusion, include how are these themes still relevant in our
days. - This essay will be based ONLY on the RSC 2018 production of Macbeth
Option 2
- Write a critical / analytical essay based on Hamlet o You can base the essay on either the play you read or the RSC 2016
production you saw. o You must specify as part of your introduction, which of the two you will be
working with. - You will select and explore three themes - Engage with how these themes are explored across the pay or the performance - As part of the conclusion, include how are these themes still relevant in our
days. Option 3
- Write a compare and contrast essay using the Macbeth RSC 2018 production and the Hamlet RSC 2016 production.
- You will select three themes that are found in both productions - Explore how each theme is presented and how different or similar is
Shakespeare’s approach in these plays towards each of these themes.
Format for ALL options - MLA Heading including
o Your name / My name / Class / Date in MLA format / Last Name with Page Number
- 5 Pages - Font 12 / Times New Roman - All paragraphs must be indented - Third Person – Do NOT write using first / second person pronouns such as I, me,
mine, our, we, you, yours. - You MUST use Parenthetical Citations for all references and quotes
o For the play – (Hamlet 3.2.10-15), where 3 is the act, 2 is the scene, and 10-15 are the lines.
o For the performances – (Hamlet 01:20:30-40), where 01 is the hour, 20 is the minute, and 30-40 is the seconds of the reference.
- Extra Sources as Reference o You may ONLY use as extra references the material provided in class, such
as the videos and interviews about these plays. o You cannot use online sources
