Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is a superior strength of mine.whether it is good emotions or bad, I am often able to accurately label in which i stand on an emotional level. By this I can highlight where my strengths are also my weaknesses. This capacity proves to be useful for I can be more successful in knowing when to apply myself in a task or duty and when I should step down and let somebody else take the reins.

I am conversant with my personal emotions, but I am good at determining the emotions of those surrounding me as well. I usually get a good sense where another person stands on an emotional level. Through determining the emotions, I modify myself into a position which could make the person feel content. This gives an advantage given that it can open up opportunities for relationships to form. Through developing relationships and having members who are content with me, I can identify an increase in their energy and identify that they are open to conversing and sharing their ideas with me.

In regard to being aware of your own strengths comes with being conversant of your weaknesses. A weakness that I face emotionally is my incapacity to effectively deal with some of my emotions. I can be very trusting if a person has brought out that he or she is responsible and worthy of being trusted and I can be adaptable. This form of adaptability could be identified when recently working with a team in my leadership and communications class. We were a few days into the project when we realized that we had hit a dead end. As we transitioned in the project and identified opportunities, we worried that we had fallen far behind. Nevertheless, my self management weakness derived in the form of not effectively being able control some other emotions of mine for instance anxiety and stress. Due to anxiety that can have occurred while conversing with others and the fear that I have of being negatively judged, I will often avoid putting myself in the focus of attention as they work with others.

I believe that if one is serious about lessening their weaknesses as well as bettering themselves as a leader, then self reflection is important. I ensure to reflect on my performances after each meeting and at times on and off again during the day. I began by identifying how I feel about my performance. After categorizing, I would then identify what it was about my performance as both a leader and a contributor which led to the good or bad result. I will determine strengths during my better performances and may ensure to put them in place into future meetings and determine weaker features in order for me to push myself to enhance them.

No matter how self aware one may be, he or she can never be perfect in judging their emotional identity. This is the reason why it is important to ask those surrounding you for responses. Getting responses on your performance can aid in determining strengths and weaknesses which may have slipped right by me. For instance, in my recent group project in my Leadership and communication course, we received responses from our teammates. From this response, I had identified that I had slight connection issues with some of my personal work. I did not have the courage to ask for responses for myself as a team member. It is scary to do mainly if you are one to worry about the possibility of negative responses as I am. This is a characteristic that may continue to work on.

As it is true that I worry at the idea of receiving responses, I am very mature in the way I deal with it. As I did with the responses acquired from the leadership and communication group, I am grateful for anyone for the responses that they offer me. I will as well take the response seriously. I will treasure these words and will implement steps needed to overcome any negativity I had acquired. To my comfort, most of the responses were mostly positive and I was content with my scores. By understanding my strengths,i have the ability to apply the features more efficiently on acquiring any desired outcomes.
