There are a few techniques that can be used to help improve decision making. These techniques include: not delaying the decision-making process, focusing on facts instead of personal deficiencies, getting assistance from outside sources, get more information to assist in your decision making, and plan “for the worst” (McClafferty, 2015).  Many people overthink during the decision-making process, which leads to a delay in the outcome (Frick, 2018).  Thinking that if you make decision A which will lead to outcome B is good on the anticipation scale, however, it is easy to fall into the pattern of making decisions for how you think the other party will react (Frick, 2018).

One good rule of thumb to making decisions, is have someone else that you can “bounce” ideas off. This person should be someone unrelated to the outcome of the decision but have knowledge of the topic.  Perhaps there will be a fresh perspective that they can bring to assist in being able to find other creative routes to take wit hard choices (Clayton, 2017).

I am also a strong believer in making lists. When I have a decision to make, I make pro/con lists and upon completion, after seeing the sides of a decision in black and white (or blue and white, if you always write in blue as I do), you will have a better feeling as to what your gut instinct is telling you is the right decision.
