Mock Study Development Worksheet

Part I: Research Topic and Problem

1. Identify a research topic related to your degree program that would be best approached from a qualitative perspective.

The Impact of hospital administrative leadership on the motivation of nurses

2. Identify a research problem related to your research topic.

Sometimes the nurses get burned out and then the hospital administrative leadership does not put in place structures that ensure that the nurses get rests in between their shifts so that when they come back to their job posts they are more refreshed and when they work, they do not make mistakes.

3. Explain why your selected topic and problem would be best approached from a qualitative perspective.

The qualitative research method is appropriate when there are a new to provide new findings and insights (Walsh, 2003) This topic can easily be approached from a qualitative approach because through the qualitative approach it is possible to have deeper experiences, understand their feelings and emotions and the situation on the ground of why the nurses are not motivated well enough to perform their duties and whether this situation is affected by the healthcare administrative leadership. A key qualitative approach that can be used for the purposes of this research is the ethnographic research studies where the researcher collects data while in the presence of the participants natural environment, for example, collecting the data while observing the nurses in their natural hospital setting.

4. Explain how your selected topic and problem relate to your degree program.

Research methods can be qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches (Creswell, 2002). On the other hand, and since I am taking a doctoral in health care administration and this selected topic, if studied well and insights gained from it, it can easily help me in devising the strategies to motivate the doctors and the nurses even more to do their best as this topic leads me to occupy leadership positions in the health care setting.

5. Provide a brief summary about what you currently know about your selected topic and problem and why they interest you.

Definitely, there are hospitals that are really trying but generally, there are nurses that often suffer a burn out and this not only affects their mental and physical and mental health, but the health of the patients is at risk because of low concentration. It interests me because I want to create to know more information about how the hospital leadership can effectively motivate the nurses to become better at what they do.

(Mudallal, Othman, & Al Hassan, 2017) (Sfantou et al., 2017)

Research problem Due to lack of motivation, sometimes individual and the organizational targets are not achieved

Massive increase in demand for health care leads to burnout among the nurses especially in a situation of reduced motivation

Lack of leadership and motivation has led to low levels of strengthening quality of the health care

Research question(s) Do motivational factors have impact on the employee’s work in health care in Serbia?

Is leadership considered as a factor in enabling workplace environmental betterment and the promotion of employee empowerment?

What is the association between leadership styles and the quality measurement in health care?

Research design Cross sectional research design Descriptive and correlational design Systematic Review

Sample size and selection Random sampling (217 participants) Statistical power processing software used in sample

determination (407 registered nurses) Systematic Random sampling

Type of data collected Quantitative Quantitative research data Bibliographic Records

Data collection procedure(s) Physical administration of questionnaires Physically being present and questionnaire

administration Comprehensive Search in the National Library between the years of 2014 to 2015

Data analysis procedure(s) Descriptive Statistics Screening and regression analysis Use of the multi-factor leadership questionnaires

Findings/Conclusions Patient satisfaction in the healthcare is depended on nurses’ motivation

Nurses burn out is a huge problem among the health care professionals found in Jordan

To enhance quality of care in the health care nursing it is mandatory to ensure that leadership is effective for this role

How does this article substantiate your research topic or problem?

analysis of motivation factors helps in own research analysis as I talk about nurses’ motivation

The administrative leadership traits in health care mentioned here can be beneficial in understanding the leadership that is necessary for the research

Quality measurement parameters like proper working conditions may have an impact on the nurse’s motivation

Part III: Formulating a Research Question and Design

1. Propose a research question for a mock study related to your topic and problem that is appropriate for each research purpose listed in the table below. Explain how your research questions align with and/or support the research purpose.

Research Question(s) Explanation

Exploratory Do Leadership communication affects nurses’ performance Leadership is expressed in the way people communicate and this looks at how they

communicate with the workers and whether this communication can psyche the health care personnel to do their best

Descriptive Do nurses look forward to promotions? If the nurses look forward to promotions, it will mean that they are motivated to become

better at the facility

Explanatory What is the impact of the senior level management on ability of nurses to work? It seeks to determine whether senior level management have any effect on nurses’

motivation

2. Consider your research topic and problem in relation to the research questions you proposed and the literature you reviewed in Part II. Provide a response to the question: “What do I want to know about this topic and problem”?

To get to know more about the role that the hospital administration can play in improving motivation

In later weeks, you will be required to gather data from interviews and observations to inform your mock study. Qualitative research traditionally employs a single data collection method; however, you are expected to use two methods (i.e., interviews and observations), which will require you to formulate a separate research question and design that can be supported using each data collection method. The purpose of this is to demonstrate your ability to engage in the practice of qualitative research on a specific topic/problem, using multiple approaches. As consumers and producers of research, you must possess a general understanding of the various research approaches and procedures.

3. Propose a research question and design for a mock study that will collect data using interviews to help you discover the knowledge you seek. Explain why your research question and design are appropriate for your study.

Do the nurses feel comfortable talking to the hospital CEO’s? This looks at the openness of communication between the staff. It provides different dimension on motivation

4. Propose a research question and design for a mock study that will collect data using observations to help you discover the knowledge you seek. Explain why your research question and design are appropriate for your study.

Do nurses behave different when senior management leaders are in their presence? It is appropriate to get to know the existing level of boundaries between employees

5. Explain how your mock study will contribute new knowledge to your discipline (i.e., what is the current gap? and how will your research help to fill that gap?).

Generate more ways of motivating nurses using leadership

Part IV: Planning 1. Begin planning your qualitative mock study by explaining your approach for each item outlined in the table below. Be sure to explain how your approach will change based on the data collection method used.

Population, Sample Size, and Selection

Consider data saturation and factors that impact saturation. Some designs require a larger sample and others could have a sample size of just one.

Random sampling, 30 participants selected to reduce time constraints and ease of analysis

Type of Data to Collect

Examples include perceptions of people regarding a phenomenon, narrative stories of people's experiences, artifacts, and written material.

Both qualitative and quantitative data analysis since we are researching on number of nurses who feel motivated and compare with

How Data Will Be Collected

Examples include interviews, focus groups, and written accounts.

Interviews to get better insights from participants

How Data Will Be Analyzed

Examples include words, themes, content, and use of software programs.

SPSS- It is easier and cheap

How Results Will Be Presented

Examples include use of participant's words, percentage and number of participants who expressed a theme, and major themes or outliers.

Graphs and the charts

Ethical Considerations

Examples include confidentiality, deception, disclosure, and moral integrity.

A promise of confidentiality that the data from the participants will only be used for research purposes and not for any other purposes

2. In the space below, develop an interview guide that includes a series of questions related to your mock study and within your area of expertise. Your interview guide must include an introductory statement about the purpose of the interview and 10 to 12 questions to facilitate data-gathering and inform your mock study. Refer to the sample questions below as you develop your interview guide.

 How would you describe…  At what point do you remember learning about  You just mentioned something about… Can you tell me more about that?  In your experience, …?  What is some different way in which you …?  In the time that you have…, how has this affected your  What do you imagine your life would be like after…?  Is there anything you wished you had known before you…?

 Is there anything else you would like to tell me?

Introductory Statement

 Is there anything else you would like to tell me?

3. In Week 6, you will conduct two observations of the actions, events, interactions, or relevant factors related to the central phenomenon in your mock study. Discuss your observation plan for each setting by responding to the prompts below.

Observation 1

a. Describe the observation setting. Example: I will be observing a 10th grade Algebra class at Superior High School.

I will be observing a nurse treating a patient

b. Who will you contact to obtain permission to conduct your observation?

The hospital administrator

c. When will you conduct this observation (i.e., date and time)?

On the 21st day of August 2021

d. What factors (if any) could interfere with your ability to complete this observation? Why? What steps can you take to mitigate these factors?

The presence of infectious disease especially in the Corona virus period, use of the protective gear

e. What questions or concerns do you have about conducting your observation?

Whether the nurses will be willing to fully participate in the research process

Observation 2

a. Describe the observation setting. Example: I will be observing a 10th grade Algebra class at Superior High School.

I will be observing the General Ward Nurses and the Specialist Nurses who will be carrying out their duties at the Sinai Cardiac Center

b. Who will you contact to obtain permission to conduct your observation?

Dr. Eleanor Burns
You CANNOT require participation. Revise your interview process - who are you interviewing current or past staff? Your sixth question seems like you are interviewing past employees. The first question puts staff in a very awkward position - choose a different question. -15 points
Dr. Eleanor Burns
For a class project, you cannot observation nurses treating patients. This is not appropriate. Change your observation process. If you conduct any observations in the hospital in you NEED to get written consent from hospital administration and nurses.
Dr. Eleanor Burns
How does this conduct with your research topic - motivation?
Dr. Eleanor Burns
-20 points. Revise your observation plan - perhaps observe staff meetings. Do not conduct your observations until you have revised your protocol & have gotten feedback from me.

The researcher

c. When will you conduct this observation (i.e., date and time)?

23rd of August, three days after conducting interviews in the first question

d. What factors (if any) could interfere with your ability to complete this observation? Why? What steps can you take to mitigate these factors?

Nurse permission, to mitigate these factors, it will be in the best interest of the participants to ensure that the researcher asks permission from them before hand before considering research in the area

e. What questions or concerns do you have about conducting your observation?

Nurses are busy people and as a result the question is whether they will have enough time to carry out the research and answer participant questions
