Policy Proposal 1A

Homework is an unavoidable constant in college. Homework is a proven helpful tool for students to learn class material and expand their knowledge (Doorn, Janssen, & O’Brien, 2010, p. 16). College classes are now moving away from traditional paper and pen homework and towards online homework (Doorn, Janssen, & O’Brien, 2010, p. 1). There are many reasons for the move to more online homework. However, for online homework to be its most helpful there is one simple rule, which must be implanted to ensure it effectiveness.

My policy is simple; if a professor assigns online homework; it must be available for more than an eight-hour window. My policy would have it that all online homework and quizzes must be available for a full week before they are due, at a minimum.

In a particular class (name excluded) online homework is only posted on Sundays and available for only eight hours. While this does not sound like much of a problem, it has created several unforeseen issues. When you consider many people work on the weekends, this can present a significant problem. Especially if their work schedule conflict with the time the homework is available. In addition, many people will have family or personal conflicts. In fact, the limitation of the eight hours in essences is mandatory class time. Many people have stated that “If you cannot meet the requirements for the class why not just drop”. While that may be a fair and valid point, class schedule, class availability limits one’s choices. This is especially true when the rules are not posted by enrolling.

The fair solution is simple: if online homework is required, it should be available for all students, regardless of their situation. I would recommend online homework being available for at least a week before it is due. This would allow ample time for students to study and plan their schedules.
