11th grade informative essay
During this unit, you will practice finding and using reliable sources to obtain information about an author; you will then apply this information to a research paper, in which you inform your reader about the author and explain a theme of one of his or her works that we will study during these lessons. You will present this information both orally and in writing (using APA format to present your sources and your research). See below for the complete details of the assignment.
Topic
Judith Ortiz Cofer.- Author
You will research information about this author's early life, influential experiences, and writing career. You will then analyze the poem, short story, or essay that we read by this author during this unit and present two paragraphs of analysis. First, you will explain how the writing directly relates to the author's experiences, and then you will complete your essay by presenting the theme of the work with examples and quotations to support the chosen theme.
Requirements
3-4 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, APA formatting
4 sources, including one primary source (the piece of fiction/non-fiction written by your chosen author)
An 2-3 minute oral presentation of your author's biographical information with a multimedia/visual presentation component (powerpoint slide, video, Prezi, Glog, etc.)
Final paper will include:
Biography: Background information about the author's early life, influential experiences, and writing career
Analysis: Biographical connection to author and analysis of theme in one of his or her works (the piece chosen for this course)
A minimum of FIVE (5) quotations from your articles and your text combined
In-text parenthetical citations for quotations and paraphrases from your sources
References List: APA format, including all of the sources used for research and analysis
