Yewdale, Merton S. “Edgar Allan Poe, Pathologically.” The North American Review, vol. 212, no. 780, 1920, pp. 686–696. JSTOR Yewdale’s article offers honest view of Edgar Allen Poe’s life and his genuine writing skills. In this paper, Yewdale covered the area of Poe’s writing like pathology, whiskey, intellect, poetry, mysticism, friendship, biographers, temperament, nature, and genetic inheritance. The article also provides the critical analysis of the relation between Poe and alcohol and how the Poe’s relationship with alcohol affected his writing skills and characters selection. Yewdale has used serious approach to discuss the life of Poe and his relationship with the drug. He further explained how a glass of wine sent Poe into nervous hysteria for several days. In the article, Yewdale mentioned that most of Poe’s literary work might have been constructed under the influence of alcohol. “He might conceivably have worked under the influence while he wrote at home.” (Yewdale, 688). So, I think this paper might be very useful for writing my research paper. The reason I consider this article as a valid source for writing my research paper is that the author of the article has discussed the relationship between Alcohol and Poe. He has also provided the critical analysis on the use of mysticism and alcohol and how they affect the sanity of a person, which related to my research paper. Apart from this, it’s found in the library database with the name of the author, date of publication, topics covered, pages and volume of the book, which is proven this source is valid and relevant.
Gerber, Gerald E. “Poe's Odd Angel.” Nineteenth-Century Fiction, vol. 23, no. 1, 1968, pp. 88–93. JSTOR, JSTOR Gerber’s article discusses the topic of tales, medical cure, accidents, and curiosity. The article has explained about the clash and surrender between the angel and the narrator of the story “The Angel of the Odd” which is crucial for my research paper. “The relationship of the angel and the narrator is based on violence and submission approach to hero worship.” (Gerber, 93). The reason I chose this article for my research paper is that it aims to explain the violence between the angel and the narrator. Here, the article aids me to prove my point that narrator's ego leads him to manifest his dark side in front of the angel. The egoistic and superior feeling of humanity and how it gets out under the influence of alcohol is clearly presented by this article. Furthermore, the articles have name of the author, name of publication: University of California Press, and date published: Jun 1968 which is why this article is valid and relevant to my research paper.
Reilly, John E. “A Source for the Immigration in ‘The Black Cat.’” Nineteenth-Century Literature, vol. 48, no. 1, 1993, pp. 93–95. “A Source for the Immigration in ‘The Black Cat’”, written by Reilly provides a critical analysis of factors like bones, murderers, and questions the morality. This article aims to explain how the crooked are punished by the divinity no matter how much they try to hide their sins from everyone and even themselves. “Justice, though slow, is sure to overtake the wicked.” (Reilly, 94). In my research paper, I am going to explain how the ego and insanity under the influence of alcohol leads a human to show his darkest self. This paper specifically is of great significance to prove my point as the paper is concerned about how a sinner is punished by the mysterious events and divinity and questions a person's morality. Also just like another authentic article, this article by Reilly has author’s name, published date: June. 1993, volume: 48, and the name of the publisher: University of California Press which makes this article valid and suitable for my research paper.
May, Charles E. "Edgar Allan Poe." Salem Press Biographical Encyclopedia, 2013. EBSCOhost. May’s journal shows the biography of Edgar Allen Poe where he describes the early life, life’s work, significance, major work: poems, short fiction, long fiction, and the drama. This journal shows the hidden dark life of Poe, the life of a drunkard and addict and how that alcohol addiction influenced in the character selection and story construction. “Poe’s personality is often erroneously maligned: he has been called a drunk, a drug addict, a hack, a sex pervert, and an exploiter.” (May, 1). As mentioned Edgar rough adulthood along with the rough childhood, that might be the reason why he had such a precise understanding of human psychology. This journal by May is really helpful for my research paper because it allows me to establish a base point of alcoholism and also the psychiatric analysis of Poe and as a matter of fact link that with his two stories, “The Black Cat” and “ The Angel of the Odd”. Poe’s alcoholic life has significantly influenced for the construction of these two stories and his darker self and unfulfilled desired can be seen through the character development in these two stories. This journal-like other has author’s name: Charles E. May, date of publication: 2013, and the name of publication: Salem Press Biographical Encyclopedia.
Ki, Magdalen Wing-chi. “Diabolical Evil and ‘The Black Cat’.” The Free Library, The Mississippi Quarterly, 22 June 2009. This article by Ki aims to explain morality and ethics along with the analysis of a murky mind. Ki has explained how the evil consumes the good side of a person and helps him to discover the darkest side of himself. Through this article, the author has shown the never-ending selfish love and dissatisfaction which emerges with the slightest influence of the drug. “Poe's story features a new ethics which operates in the domain of drives, and shows a distinct love of unreason and displeasure.” (Ki, 3). This article explains the darkest desire of human and questions the ethics and morality of a person. Apart from this it also does the psychological analysis of the drunk narrator and analyzes his behavior under the impact of alcohol. Overall, it helps to prove my point in the essay by explaining the evil-doing of the murder of the cat and his wife and hiding the corpse behind the wall. This article since written by an author: Magdalen Wing-chi Ki consist of a name of publication: The Mississippi Quarterly, and date of publication: Jun 22, 2009, is a valid and relevant source for my research paper.
