Guidelines for Essay 4: The Social Role of the Artist

Review your arguments from earlier theme essays. What would you say are the dominant social roles of visual artists today? Consider traditional social roles for artists from the past. Do different time periods, geographic regions or genders alter your response to this question? Why or why not? (Cite evidence so that your response is specific.)

Drawing upon your theme four Dossier, focus on one contemporary artist from among those discussed in class in this theme. Choose one work of art made by a contemporary artist discussed . You should relate your discussion of your chosen piece to the work of other artists from this and previous themes. I encourage you to first consider which potential piece might be rich, demonstrating interconnections with other artists and pieces from the history of art.

– How does your chosen piece represent the role of visual artist today?

- To what extent does this work refer to earlier historic moments, artists and creations? (for example, French cathedrals from the Gothic era, Ming dynasty pottery, American Dadaism, etc.)

- How do references to earlier periods from the history of art contribute to this artist’s social role today? In your conclusion return to what you think is the principal role of artist’s today based on your investigation. Papers should reference at least two assigned readings from this theme (this includes documentaries, gallery or museum visits, online articles and textbook assignments) and additional evidence from at least two assignments (from any theme). This means a total of four assigned resources, two from theme four and two more from themes one through four.
