1. Introductory/topic sentence (General topic/main argument of the article)
In the article ‘Distribution and Protection of Chinese Beech under the Background of Climate Change’ the authors Xiang et al. Have shown the negative effects of global warming on the environment through using the example of Beech, which is a type of tree where climate change will affect this type of species in the couple of decades.

Although there is distribution pattern change and protection efficiency of Chinese Beech under climate change., Xiang et al. writes an effective article because of the well-organized structure and the detailed evidence provided. Comment by Heesun Nam: Main argument OR writing style

Based on the above information, please write a summary for your article review here.
Xiang et al illustrates that there is distribution pattern change and protection efficiency of Chinese Beech under climate change. At first the authors begins by showing his material and methods to support his main argument, where the MaxEnt Model that he uses stands out among other distribution models and the data were personally collected for best accuracy. Then the authors elaborates that through analyzing the data, there are suitable habitats and hot spots that also will change throughout the decades. After that, he continues to talk about the result, through MaxEnt Model, there are highly suitable area for the Beech and in 2070 the area will be focused on northern China. In the end the authors suggest for protection efficiency, with a protection rate in low ten percent, there needs to be more attention and protection. Comment by Heesun Nam: What is the precise THESIS (main argument) of the article? Comment by Heesun Nam: , which is...
Task #4: Article Review - Evaluative Paragraph Worksheet
The purpose of this task is to write one evaluative paragraph for your article review by following the general paragraph pattern.
Assertion |
State what the paragraph will discuss/prove with the main THESIS key word (overall evaluation) and an ASSERTION key word (criteria + evaluation of criteria) from the roadmap.
Body paragraph #2 e.g. However, the article is ineffective because of the complex writing style through which the author writes the article
Explanation (one sentence) |
Explain the evaluation of the criteria (assertion key word) in more detail. e.g. More specifically (=In more detail), the author chooses to use a series of jargons that do not have a significant bearing on the overall main argument.
Evidence 1 |
More general evidence below; make sure to introduce with accurate context to the criteria (i.e. organization/evidence/style) and use some “quotation” to prove close reading of the article. e.g. For instance, when the author describes the scene of a child being separated from her mother in order to be taken to her workplace, the author states, “The mise-en-scene of this scene is heartbreaking.” (Smith, 2017, p.00)
Discussion 1 |
Explain how the evidence proves the evaluation in your own words. Remember to use specific evaluative language/ focus on proving the evaluations of the criteria, and how the author was successful/unsuccessful in using the criteria. e.g. Clearly, the author is using the phrase “mise-en-scene” in order to describe the heartbreaking scene of the separation between the mother and the child, but the words do not bring any new meaning or introduce any new idea into the argument. The phrase “mise-en-scene” is used to describe a particular scene from a film, thereby not being appropriate for this type of article (citation). The writing style of the article takes away from the description of the scene.
Evidence 2 |
Use another quote or direct reference to the book/article. Make sure to introduce with accurate context to the criteria. Use some “quotation” to prove close reading of the article. e.g. In addition, Moreover, Not only this) + (The article also states/reports/highlights) |
Discussion 2 |
Explain the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the evidence as it is related to the chosen criteria and its evaluation. Use specific evaluative language to justify your evaluation. e.g. Clearly (=For this reason, With this in mind), This suggests/reveals/means/highlights that, |
Connection sentence |
Using the thesis key word (overall evaluation) and the assertion key word (criteria + evaluation of the criteria) (same key words from the assertion), summarize how the paragraph proved the assertion/thesis e.g. Therefore(=Thus/Hence), |
Please complete your body paragraph in the table below.
Body paragraph #1 assertion: Although
Body paragraph #2 assertion: However ,
Body paragraph #3 assertion: … also …
Assertion |
In additionAlso, the article is effective because of the detailed evidence provided throughout the article. |
Explanation (one sentence) |
In more detail, the author explains his choice of the model used and data collecting to strengthen his evidence to support his main argument.
Evidence 1 |
For instance, when they were doing research, they believe that “the distribution records of Chinese Beech in some literatures are very Comment by Heesun Nam: More context few and inaccurate” therefore they conducted a survey to ensure the accuracy of the model. (Xiang, 2022, P2342). Comment by Heesun Nam: APA
Discussion 1 |
As you can see, the papers they were researching were from global biodiversity database, Chinese Virtual Herbarium field investigation and other published literature where the information should be reliable. But they believe that the data was off and collected the data themselves which becomes very strong evidence.
Evidence 2 |
Not only this, the article also reports. ‘In recent years, the MaxEnt model has been widely used in the prediction of suitable habitats of tree species’ (Xiang, 2022, P2342)
Discussion 2 |
This highlights that the technology used was widely known and up to date, which also proves that their evidence is very accurate and strong. Comment by Heesun Nam: More details re: quote & assertion
Connection sentence (one sentence) |
Therefore, the article is effective because the evidence given is accurate and strong, and the technology used was widely known and modern. |
