In Antebellum  America , African Americans fought against the racial system with arguments about shared humanity.

Thus, Douglass’s and Walker’s work, along with many others, helped to convince a racist society that slavery caused genuine human suffering.

Although laws of the time put them in a subordinate position, African Americans did not  accept  that they were truly inferior to White Americans.

He maintained that a  free black  man should have full equality with a free white man, because they were fundamentally equal.
