For my case study selection, I have selected the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC), specifically focusing on its Community Corrections subdivision. The FDC is one of the largest correctional systems in the United States, supervising thousands of offenders through its probation and parole programs. The department's mission is to “provide a continuum of services to meet the needs of those entrusted to our care, creating a safe and professional environment with the outcome of reduced victimization, safer communities, and an emphasis on the premium of life.”
My interest in Community Corrections stems from its role in rehabilitation and public safety. This subdivision is responsible for overseeing probation and parole services, ensuring that offenders successfully reintegrate into society while being monitored to prevent recidivism. This approach aligns with modern correctional philosophies that emphasize restorative justice. The effectiveness of the policies and procedures within this department can provide valuable insights into best practices and necessary reforms in correctional supervision. Evaluating the Community Corrections subdivision will allow me to explore how structured supervision can impact public safety and offender outcomes.
