Multiple individual theorists stand out as providing instrumental theories regarding children's development, especially applicable in early childhood education best practices. From around the globe, multiple theorists expanded from their original career work and investigated the science behind how children learn, grow, and develop. These are some of the most influential theorists that particularly impact our work as early childhood educators.
Jean Piaget
Jean Piaget was born in Switzerland in 1896. He was an epistemologist (one who studies the nature of knowledge). His focus was not on what children know or when they know, but how they know. Many early childhood teachers feel that Piaget focused too much on the thought processes of children and not enough on their feelings and social interactions with their peers and teachers. Piaget encouraged an approach that was play-based and experiential, using kinesthetic learning as an effective method for young children.
Lev Vygotsky
Lev Vygotsky was born in Russia in 1896; he taught literature in secondary school. This heightened his interest in how people learn. He was especially interested in cognitive growth and language development and how they related to learning. Vygotsky introduced the concept of "scaffolding", encouraging adults to support children's development by determining the child's present level of ability and planning toward the next anticipated ability level.
Erik Erikson
Erik Erikson was an artist and a teacher, born in Germany in 1902. He met his future wife, Anna Freud, daughter of Sigmund Freud, and became interested in psychology. Anna was a psychoanalyst, and she convinced Erikson to study
