POST 1

The main difference between strategic planning and strategic implementation is that strategic planning addresses the what and why of activities, whereas strategic implementation addresses the who, where, when, and how. Additionally, "strategic planning involves devising strategies to meet specific objectives and determining what resources this will require" and "strategic implementation is the execution of a strategic plan" (Mack, 2017). Both strategic planning and strategic implementation are important and critical to success. While both strategic planning and strategic implementation are great for planning and implementing new strategies for the company, both present challenges when it comes to evaluating how well each is working to achieve the goals they were devised to help achieve. "Planning typically isn’t explicit about what the organization chooses not to do and why. It does not question assumptions" (Osberg et al., 2015).

While strategic planning sets the groundwork and identifies the plan moving forward, it is the strategic implementation that will be able to be measured for the outcomes associated with strategic planning. However, there are pitfalls to strategic implementation as well. The pitfalls can include a lack of communication, an overwhelming plan, a meaningless plan, not considering implementation, or not considering a progress report (Olsen, 2022). It is much easier to avoid pitfalls when they are clearly identified. By not having clear communication, an overwhelming or meaningless plan can fall by the wayside during implementation. Additionally, if there is not a proper progress report to use as a way to measure outcomes, there is no way to tell if the strategic plan is working or what needs to be improved.

POST 2

Strategic planning is basically the establishment of goals for a company/organization. Strategic management is the implementation of strategic planning. Many various peer-reviewed resources do not separate the two definitions as one is the result of the other. Strategic planning is strategy formulation and strategic management is using resources and processes to institutionalize missions and goals (Oregon State, 2022). Strategic planning and strategic management can both be measured with data, which should not be limited to simple profit margins. Key performance measures demonstrate a somewhat holistic perspective at least with human resources, although that too has it's limitations. Managers and other executive types should also be looking at the safety of the organization, it's effect on the environment, and operational costs and worth (BCD, 2022).

Many new schools of thought related to strategic planning theory have evolved over the last couple years. Researchers used to think that strategic planning scholarship lead to always accurate hypothesizes, but many researcher have suggested otherwise (BROMILEY, & RAU (2022). It is similar to say that strategic planning/goal setting does not always yield the expected results. Yielding results would only come with proper strategic management.
