Articles Summary
The main issue being discussed in the two articles includes banning of the blood ban from gay men. Gay men were barred from donating blood by the Food and drug administration since 1983. One article talks about rethinking the ban while the other talks about condemning of the ban as a form of bias. In most cases, the issue of donating blood is based on person willingness but for the gay men, this was not the case as they were banned from making blood donations. The reason for the ban is to keep the supply of blood safe from HIV a virus that causes AIDS. However, on the other critiques of the ban claim it as unfair as it singles out the gay men as well as unjustified in terms of medical and scientific point of view.
The parties involved in this issue are mainly the gay men because they are the main targets of the ban. Even if a gay man is willing to donate his blood in an issue of life and death the law does not allow him to. Another party involved in the issue includes the food and drug administration because it is the board that banned the gay men from making blood donations. The issue interests me because it concerns the everyday issues that we came across. There have been many cases where gay men have been discriminated because of their sexual orientation. I think these articles should also interest people beyond the chosen field because we need to understand issues that we face in our societies well so as to make the right judgment concerning them.
