As mentioned in the video When a Marine is killed, there is worry and doubt which a platoon leader should end quickly.  “His death is not the fault of anyone who is sitting here, if it belongs to anybody it belongs to me because I was the one who was out there in charge making the decisions. So just understand, we are doing the right things, we are doing good work, we are making a difference here, we are fighting for the people of Afghanistan, we are here fighting for our country which is what we all signed up to do.”

These inspirational words show that managers should learn so many things from Golf Company. Their thoughts, missions, challenges and losses, their feelings show us that the strength of teams comes from their needs for achievement, power, and affiliation. Managers should understand these needs and their inspirational struggle well. Then managers should try to create work environments responsive to these needs. Their needs for achievement is so important to do something better and efficiently, put their competencies to work and take risks to achieve challenging goals. Their needs for power help them to control other people and influence their behaviors and to be responsible for them. Also, people with a need for affiliation seek for social approval and satisfying interpersonal relationships.

I have to agree that enforcement is key on top of a good handbook policy. However, that is ok if it is stated up front, setting people up will just create conflicts in the workplace. Usually companies, when you sign their contract to be their employee hand you a long privacy policy that you should carefully read it if you are concerned with your privacy. It’s not right to use company equipment for personal usages. Because they usually want to be on top of everything that their employee does and monitor them. But how far they can go is the key question here. Some companies hand their employee these laptops and they have the right to remotely access the webcam at any time, e.g. when the person is at home and the laptop is with them. I think these kind of situation is considered as violating privacy. Anyhow, it depends on policies issued by the company’s CEO and team.
