THE QUESTION

Illegal copying / sharing of software, movies, videos, and music are examples of intellectual property rights being violated.  Choose one and discuss the negative impact on the owner(s) of the intellectual property being stolen.

THE CLASSMATE ANSWER

Illegal copying of movies has been a big problem for owners in that line of business. The internet has escalated this problem by making it easier to copy movies illegally. This can make it harder to track down who specifically is copying the movies. Piracy needs to be decreased, but it’s much easier said than done. You would have to change society to reduce the amount of piracy in today’s generation. The owners of movie companies are losing profit from how much piracy takes place on a daily basis. People won’t buy the movies because they won’t have to if they get them from an illegal third party. If movies are not being bought, then this can affect the growth of the movie. For example, the movie could be an outstanding movie with a great plotline and would have sold millions upon billions of copies, but piracy has stolen that from them. If the movie did not bring in enough profit, then they might not have enough funding for movies in the future. The most significant negative impact that illegally copying movies can have on owners is that they could lose their company. If not enough profit is coming in, investors won’t want to be involved in the company, and the company will become nonexistent.
