These topics are hot topics for healthcare and CMS will deduct reimbursements on quality scores, starting in 2013. They are monitoring these scores now to see what percentage they will be deducting. We are finding in the hospitals across the country that nurses may be unclear about these and how they can impact patient outcomes.
Care Measures (AMI, CHF, PNU, and SCIP). Patient Safety Goals Fall Preventions HCAHPS-(Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Plans) Patient satisfaction scores
Go to these links and compare your facility to another hospital in your area. If you are not currently working in a hospital use a hospital that you did clinical at during school or a hospital your family would use. As a change agent pick one of the topics and discuss how you can implement change in your department to bring your quality scores up. Post your hospital scores in your presentation.
Answer:
I live in Texas and have worked at Baylor Scott & White the Heart Hospital-Plano. It has received The Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission and is certified as a Primary Heart Attack center (Quality Check n.d). It claims to offer the best services in town. It was ranked as a Top Performer in 2012 by Joint Commission for its services for heart attack, pneumonia, and surgical care patients. According to the Best Regional Ranking by U.S News, it is also ranked at 8th best hospital in Texas (US News Health n.d). According to the rantings of the official website of the USA, it is rated 5 stars for the overall hospital performance and 4 stars for the patient survey rating.
I would like to compare my faculty with the Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas, which has also received The Gold Seal of Approval by the Joint Commission and is certified as an advanced comprehensive stroke center (Quality Check n.d). It is ranked as the 4th best hospital at the regional level in Texas by Best Regional Ranking of U.S News (US News Health n.d). Patient Safety includes all the health care protocols expected from an accredited medical center by Joint Commission. These patient safety protocols include patient management in an emergency, health equity, positive health outcomes, and a supportive health environment for patients, their families, and faculty. Comparing "patient safety measures" in both the hospitals in my region I have figured out that my faculty lacks in the area of providing patients with a positive, supportive health environment (Joint Commission n.d). The patient survey rating indicated that the communication skills of health care staff need to be improved so that they could counsel the patient in a better way. Effective communication skills and cultural competency are the two major areas that need to be worked on for my faculty to improve its future performance.
