Professor & Class,
The sociological imagination is putting yourself in another’s shoes and seeing things from another’s perspective. This will help us understand what they are going through, and the larger society. Social forces that influence youth suicide trends could be eating disorders, drug abuse, sexual abuse/rape, parental divorce, trauma, household financial problems , being bullied, social rejection, anger/guilt, breakups, illness, disability, domestic violence, academic failure, loneliness, feelings of being misunderstood, insecurities, extreme mood swings, loss, and mental disorders ("Teenage suicide in the United States," 2004). The suicide rate in India has increased from 38,829, a rate of 7.8 in 1967 to a whopping 134,799, a rate of 11.0 suicides between 15 and 29 years might be caused by emotional stress as they enter into adulthood entering into relationships before they are fully mature enough to handle them, rejection by parents, employment status, marriage issues and others create heavy pressures on these people. Ages 30-44 have reasons like family problems, including interpersonal difficulties with spouses, unemployment, and debt. Farmers in India have major debts and their income isn’t enough to pay off borrowed money. India’s soldier’s extensive deployments cause stressors of not being able to take care of problems at home ("Suicide in India? changing trends and challenges ahead," 2015). The suicides might also be caused by “lack of basic amenities, ineffectual leadership, and sometimes humiliation at the hands of their officers ("Suicide in India? changing trends and challenges ahead," 2015). Soldiers might turn to suicide because of brain injuries due to roadside bombs. “The brain cannot heal deep damage inflicted by repeated blasts” (Thomas E. Ricks, 2018). These soldiers might have mental disorders caused by war such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. When you put yourself if these peoples shoes and try to understand what these things might feel like if they happened to you, you are more likely able to help them and find preventative solutions such as mental health services, suicide hotlines, local crisis centers, and education on what kinds of things you can do to help yourself.
