Read Integrative case study: Safety leadership or safety management? In Iszatt-White & Saunders (2017), pp 53-55. Respond to the questions in at least 250-300 words:
a To what extend do you think each contract manager was just responding appropriately to the skills, abilities, and attitudes of the workers on the contract?
b Do you think ‘leadership versus management’ is a useful distinction to make in this situation? If so, why?
c Do you think it should be part of the contract manager’s role to create a particular safety culture within the contract, or should this be a company-wide initiative, led from the top?
d What are the risks attaching to each of the approaches to safety leadership/management illustrated in the case study? How might these be replicated in relation to other leadership/management issues?
Weeks 1 and 2 introduce students to the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary nature of leadership and followership as both art and science. Leadership covers the relationship, vision, and change aspect of organizational or community life, while management provides consistency, maintenance, sustainability, and various task accomplishments. Students will analyse the role of power and influence in leader-follower relationships. They will also have opportunities for integrating Christian value-based leadership with the findings of social and behavioural research on authority and obedience.
Week 2 Topics
· Sectoral similarities and differences in leadership
· Christ and leadership-followership research: from Great Man to “great process.”
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module you should be able to:
· Analyse sectoral similarities and differences in leadership.
· Assess the historical progression of leadership-followership research from Great Man to “great process” in the context of Christ’s example and teaching.

Week 2 Leadership vs. Management
devotion
Leadership is a process.
Exodus 2:1-4:31
Consider the following leaders in the bible:
Noah – took him 120 years before the rains.
Moses – he was 40 when he killed an Egyptian, another 40 years tending flocks: he was 80 y.o. when God called him to lead His people out of Egypt.
Joseph – was sold into slavery and then in prison 14 years on a wrongful conviction.
“God prepares leaders in a crockpot, not a microwave. More important than the awaited goal is the work God does in us while we wait” (Maxwell, 2007, p. 66)
