Directions for Argument Analysis Activity

The purpose of this assignment is to give you practice with the main objectives of Module 3. All of the work you do with this assignment will assist you with drafting your argument essay.

1. First, read all of the assigned readings in this module carefully (Chapter 7 and Chapter 10).

3. Select a reading to analyze and interpret.

4. Moving from inquiry to interpretation to argument (selecting a topic to analyze and research) complete all of the following:

Write a paragraph-long objective summary for the reading you have selected.

Next, answer the following questions from Chapter 7 (Barnet et al. 193, 203) about the reading you have selected:

· What happens in the story, poem, or play? What are the most important events?

· What sorts of people are the main characters?

· What especially pleased you or displeased you in the story, poem, or play?

· Do you have any thoughts about the work's title? Is it significant? Explain.

· What is the function of the setting in this story or play?

· Why has this (or these) character(s) been introduced?

· What is the author trying to tell us?

· How has this idea been developed and made more complex?

· How exactly can we describe the work's tone?

· What is the difference in assumptions between this [work] and another one?

Use your responses to the questions above. to develop your ideas for analysis (as demonstrated throughout Chapter 7 by the readings, tips/suggestions, and sample student essays), or choose a prompt for writing as explained in the assignment directions for the argument essay, and start working on brainstorming, topic development, research inquiry, and outlining, as explained and demonstrated in Chapter 10.

Submit one to two page (double-spaced) analysis of your plan composed of the objective summary and analysis responses and label it:lastname.firstname.ArgAnal and submit it as an attachment to the Assignments tab.
