Diabetes Management
Diabetes is a widespread chronic disease that affects more than 10% of the population in the United States (American Diabetes Association, 2018). Diabetes is a long-life disease that affects both children and adults. It claims over 150,000 each year. People suffering from diabetes either have high blood sugar level because there is low production of insulin in the body or the body cells do not utilize the produced insulin. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common type of diabetes it’s defined by the inability of bodily tissues to respond to insulin adequately, and it's often accompanied by insulin insufficiency. It is the most common type of diabetes. For patients to live a high-quality life and limit the risk of complications, proper diabetes treatment is necessary. The average diabetic patient, on the other hand, has little information of how to manage their illness.
Diabetes can be managed through diabetes self-management education and training (DSMT). DSMT services can be provided by medical practitioners such as nurses who meet quality standards of permitted national accrediting organizations (American Diabetes Association, 2018). Patients need to be trained how to control diabetes and this training should be done regularly because severity of diabetes in the body varies with time (American Diabetes Association, 2018). In most instances nurses take up the role of training diabetic patients on the measures they should take to control diabetes. Diabetes training services can be provided either individually or within a group. Diabetes self-management education and training is a significant module of incorporated diabetes care, it is continual practice of promoting the information, skill, and capacity required for pre-diabetes and diabetes self-care (Hailu et al., 2019). It's a program in which patients are educated about diabetes and how to use self-management techniques to keep the diabetes under control.
DSMT helps manage diabetes and prevent additional complications (Hailu et al., 2019). DSMT focuses on how patients handle insulin reactions, how they recognize indicators of high and low blood glucose and what to do if they occur, how to check glucose levels with a glucose monitor, and how to change their health habits.
Significance of diabetes management
First, diabetes management help relieve diabetes symptoms in patients. Diabetes can get out of control if a patient have too much stress, don’t take their diabetes medicines, don’t follow their meal plan and if they don’t regularly exercise. Diabetes symptoms might be severe if they are not managed at the right time; this is why DSMT is recommended since the patients will be able to control their conditions effectively (Hailu et al., 2019).
Second, diabetes management aids in the correction of linked health issues as well as the reduction of diabetes-related morbidity, mortality, and economic expenditures. Diabetes management helps to patients know how to control diabetes and this makes them stand a chance to lead a normal and healthy life for a long time thus reducing mortality rate due to diabetes among the population. Diabetes treatment is at times very expensive especially when the condition has deeply affected internal organs. That is why diabetes management is important because it will educate people on how to lead a healthy lifestyle and this will help save on the cost they would have incurred while going for diabetes treatment.
Fourthly, diabetes treatment aids in the prevention of acute and long-term problems to the greatest extent possible. If diabetes is not under control it might lead to short term problems like hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. In the long run, failing to regulate diabetes might harm vital organs like kidneys, heart, nerves and eyes. If the diabetes condition is diagnosed at an early stage diabetes management techniques can be applied to reduce this complications. This will aid in the improvement of the diabetic's quality of life and productivity.
Lastly diabetes management helps in reducing hospitalization of diabetic patients. Reduced hospitalization will help health facilities to focus on other patients with severe health complications which will help improve overall population health because health facilities are able to accommodate other patients (Adrienneciletti, 2021).
PICOT questions
1. Can a weekly self-management training and education program, as opposed to normal DSMT, be more helpful in improving diabetic self-management behavior and knowledge in type 2 diabetes patients?
2. Is a more complete and multidisciplinary approach to patient education, compared to standard patient education, more effective at lowering blood glucose levels in those with type 2 diabetes?
3. Are adult diabetic patients who have low social economic status (SES) at increased risk for diabetic complications?
In conclusion diabetes is a difficult and burdensome disease that needs a diabetic to make several daily decisions about food, physical activity, and medications. It also needs the individual's mastery of a variety of self-management abilities. Diabetes management has greatly played a major role in laying the foundation and support to diabetes patient where it guides them on how to manage their condition. Health institutions providing diabetes management services to diabetic patients will help in improving patient’s health significantly.
