Development of Folk Knowledge
1
Introduction
As the children continue to grow and develop, they interact with many items within their environment including family and friends, toys, and different emotions among others.
It is through these interactions with the environment that the child is able to develop and grow steadily.
Hence, it is important for the adults around the child to provide an enabling environment that favors their development process to help them develop a foundation that can maximize their future well-being.
Throughout child development, the children need to be guided in order to achieve their full potential and grow in the right direction as they grow in to adulthood
2
Introduction
Folk abilities are universal forms of cognitive competence and thinking biases.
This is because while they have an inherent basis; their mature expression is dependent on evolutionarily appropriate developmental experiences.
Thus, folk development is important in the development of children because it contributes to their attentional, motivational, and social abilities as they continue to grow.
Folk abilities allow children to learn the nuances of the social groups and ecologies that they live in.

1. Overview Of The Topic Areas
This presentation addresses several elements in the cognitive development of children, particularly in how folk abilities enhance the mental growth of children.
Therefore, to effectively illustrate the various aspects of folk development, this chapter will discuss a wide range of subjects/ topics including
Theory of cognitive development
Theories of cognitive development are essential in describing and explaining the various factors and processes that influence the cognitive development of children.
Folk psychology: developing a theory of mind
Basic social-cognitive skills underlying theory of the mind
Development of mind reading
Theory of mind, evolved modules, and autism
Extending theory of the mind

1. Overview Of The Topic Areas
Folk biology: understanding the biological world
Is it alive?
What young children know and don’t know about biology
Where do babies come from?
Folk physics: understanding the physical world
Development of spartial cognition
Object-oriented play and tool use
Children’s understanding of time
Final reflections of the physical world

2. What Is Role Cognition?
From a childhood development perspective, cognition can be described as the process of acquiring and understanding knowledge through one’s thoughts, senses, and experiences.
Therefore, cognition can be understood as the mental process of perceiving or knowing the things, words, and other information that people encounter everyday.
This plays a significant role In development of children, particularly in the learning and communication processes at different stages of development.
Therefore, the role of cognition in the development process as well as in everyday life, particularly in discovering and learning new things.

3. What Are The Theoretical Attempts To Explain Cognition?
Cognitive development among children in their early years of development refers to the development of their mental capacities.
Cognitive development takes place in a free, creative, and fanciful manner.
More often, the imagination of the children widens rapidly helping to improve their mental grasp of the world around them.
Cognitive development can be illustrated through different theoretical models including those developed by Piaget and Vygotsky.

Vygotsky’s social development theory
Vygotsky’s social development theory is one of the most dominant theories in psychology.
It places more emphasis on the fundamental or basic role of social interactions in assisting in one’s cognitive development.
One of the main principles of the theory is that learning is a process necessary for universal development of cultures, especially focusing on the human psychological function.
Thirdly, the theorist places emphasis on the impact of language on cognitive development.
8
Vygotsky’s social development theory
This theory can be applied in the understanding of cognitive development in early childhood in various ways.
For example, the theory places great importance on social interactions and language development as the main areas of social development in a person.
Consequently, these concepts can be used to help the children learn how to deal with other people and improve their communication and interpersonal skills as well as helping them appreciate their cultural environment and language through strategies such as learning poetry and vocabulary
9
Jean Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory
Piaget’s theory, approaches the concept of development from a moral perspective.
That is, the theory analyses children’s development in terms of their moral reasoning.
Therefore, the theory examines how children comprehend rules, their understanding of moral responsibility, and how they understand the concept of justice.
Consequently, Piaget suggested two developmental stages, namely, heteronomous and autonomous morality.
Heteronomous occurs between years 5 and 9 and only involves morality imposed on children from external sources such as parents.
However, in autonomous moral development, children determine their own moral rules

4. How Have Changes In Society And Other Events Influenced The Development And / Or Refinement Of Cognitive Theories?
Cognitive development theories have evolved over the years, taking into consideration several factors.
Predominantly, cognitive theories address different aspects of mental development including emotional, social, and mental growth.
The study of cognition has been influenced and shaped by various factors including family relationships, one’s age, or individual temperaments

5. Does Context, Constructivism, And Epistemology Matter In The Larger Scheme Of Things?
When trying to understand cognitive development in children, context, constructivism, and epistemology matter in the larger scheme of things?
Children raised up in different social contexts have different processes that lead to their cognitive development.
This is because cognitive development is culture-specific; which calls for one to understand the culture in which a child is raised in order to fully comprehend their mental development process
12
5. Does Context, Constructivism, And Epistemology Matter In The Larger Scheme Of Things?
For example, context comes into play when analyzing how issues such as play and language use facilitate their cognitive development.
Therefore, children who are introduced ton different types of games at an early age are able to develop their social and cognitive skills.
In addition, factors such as education and epistemology are also crucial in understanding the unique factors that contribute to one’s cognitive development as a child.
13
6. What Are Their Educational Applications?
The understanding of cognitive development can be critical in education in various ways.
For example, Piaget’s theory of cognitive development highlights different levels of mental development at various ages.
This information is important particularly when developing learning tools for children since this has to consider the levels of development of ten children.

Conclusion
In conclusion, Folk abilities can be understood as universal forms of cognitive competence and thinking biases.
This is because while they have an inherent basis; their mature expression is dependent on evolutionarily appropriate developmental experiences.
Thus, folk development is important in the development of children because it contributes to their attentional, motivational, and social abilities as they continue to grow.
Therefore, understanding childhood development is considered one of the most critical stages or phase of development because the changes that the children go through have a direct influence on their overall development into adolescence, adulthood, and old age.
