Description Paragraph
Description: In a descriptive paragraph, the writer uses sensory details such as sights, sounds, smells, tastes, feelings, and textures to create vivid images in the reader’s mind. When a person is writing a descriptive piece, there should be very detailed observations, write what you see in your mind. The more detail the better the story. In addition, the writer should use spatial order to create a clear visual image of a person, place, object, or scene: You should start at one point and move in one direction as not to confuse the audience such as the location or arrangement in space from top to bottom, bottom to top, right to left, left to right, near to far, far to near, inside to outside, or outside to inside.
Just imagine you are holding your phone to shoot a video of a scene in front of you. You would likely start on your left, then move in front, then go to the right, you may even tilt the camera up to show the sky/ceiling, and maybe even down, but you would not jump from left, to up, to right, to down. The viewer would get totally dizzy. You have to be consistent and move nice and steady in a consistent direction.
Transitional Expressions: Next to, near, close, far, up, down, between, above, below, left, right, center, toward, away.- All of these are used when writing a descriptive paragraph.
Here is an example:
The Mermaid of The Red Sea
Jeddah, or what Jeddawis like to call it “The Mermaid of The Red Sea”, has many breathtaking attractions. From the North, there is New Corniche. A place where you can go with your family and have a wonderful time feeling the breeze of the sea as you walk beside it. Moreover, you cannot visit Jeddah without stopping by the King Fahad fountain. In fact, it’s the tallest fountain in the world. As you go down a little bit, the Red Sea Mall will be your third destination in the North. Although it is not the biggest in Saudi Arabia, the Red Sea Mall is one of the best malls in the country. In the center, Old Jeddah presents a flavor of the past where you can enjoy traditional food, such as Ma’sub, Balela, and Sahlap tea. In addition, the Floating Mosque is a stunning combination of creative architecture and religion. It is also one of the well-known locations in Saudi Arabia. The South is full of motels, but the concept of motels is different in Saudi Arabia. Basically, you get a room where you can have a private dinner with your friends or family. Moreover, South Jeddah has a large barren desert where you can have a barbecue as the moon casts its shadow creating a spectacular image. As pretty as a mermaid, Jeddah is considered one of the best cities in Saudi Arabia.
