Step 1: Understand the Problem Scenario

What problem are we trying to resolve?

· How are virtuous leaders identified?

What learning outcomes are expected upon completion of the process?

· Define what characteristics make up a virtuous leader.

· Creation of an evaluation assessment tool to analyze how an organization’s leadership aligns with the Virtuous Business Model.

· Determine if virtuous leadership is a prerequisite for virtuous organizations.

Step 2: Identify Facts and Stakeholders

What information and facts are known?

· The company is an investing firm that manages portfolios of Christian-based companies

· Virtual Business Model (VBM) has been adopted, but not yet implemented

· The company needs assessment criteria to evaluate current leaders of other Christian-based companies wanting to join portfolio

· This evaluation should consider global/international factors

Who are the stakeholders and what is the role of each stakeholder?

STAKEHOLDER

ROLE

Top Management

Contribute the overall direction of the company (vision, mission, etc.), past financial statements, and other pertinent documentation

Lower Level Employees

Contribute character assessments (?) based on work experience of leaders within the organization

Customers

Contribute experiences, concerns, and other meaning qualitative information based on past interactions, dealings with current organizational leadership

Team

Contribute research findings about identification methodology and distribute surveys and findings to identify virtuous leaders

Now that we have identified the facts and stakeholders, agree on and write out the problem you are trying to address.

Our investing firm specializes in managing portfolios of companies that operate according to Christian values and principles. Staying true to our vision, and as we look to expand, we want to ensure the leaders of prospective organizations adhere to our Virtuous Business Model (VBM). We seek to develop an analysis tool that goes beyond the analysis of ethics statements and training, but also observes the actual business practice of these organizations, domestically and internationally, to identify virtuous leadership within them.

Step 3: Generate Hypotheses

Based on currently known facts, stakeholders, and your problem statement, brainstorm some potential solutions. At this early stage, what are some ideas or impressions you have regarding solutions? As you conduct research and learn more about the problem, you will continue to add new hypotheses and refine older ones.

Assumption: Companies that are led by virtuous leaders should instill and reflect the correct values and behaviors within their organizations which our firm is looking to add into our portfolio mix.

Condition: There is a directive to grow the portfolio with virtuous businesses. We know that having a virtuous leader sets the stage; however, there currently is no defined method for identifying the characteristics of a virtuous leader.

Prediction/ Hypothesis #1: If virtuous characteristics, both behavioral values and documented values, are identified, then we will be able to qualify which companies we would like to add to the investment portfolio.

Prediction/ Hypothesis #2: If we have an understanding of global virtuous characteristics, then we will be able to appropriately qualify companies globally/internationally

Ideas for solution:

· Gather characteristics that displays virtuous leadership

· Gather documentation that supports the company as being a virtuous organization

· Obtain feedback from stakeholders to gauge servant leadership characteristics and experiences with the organization

· Gather definitions of virtuous leadership from a global perspective

Step 4: Identify Knowledge Deficiencies and Research Plan

PBL Process Chart:

What do we need to know to adequately address the problem? How will we learn this?

· Identification of cultural behaviors and styles that influence globalized characteristics of virtual leadership.

· Evaluate and understand the personal challenges of moral and ethical limits.

· Establish a consistent methodology for determining the criteria for virtuous leadership.

· Knowledge creation for the best possible environment and circumstances for virtuous leaders to flourish.

· Significance of stakeholders and the virtuous leader relationship

When completing the Action Plan column, remember that a variety of research tasks may be used to address questions based on the type of data needed. These research tasks may encompass qualitative or quantitative approaches, including interviews, focus groups, literature review, internet or database searches, field observations, surveys, simulations, statistical analysis of existing data sets.

Action Plan:

· Utilize focus groups to develop list of work-related and non-work-related behavioral activities that displays virtuous leadership, i.e.:

· Involvement in charitable organizations

· Involvement in the community, i.e. volunteer activities

· Employee support, i.e. pastoral services

· Recognition of work-life balance and choice to worship, i.e. Sunday and holiday closures

· Demonstrated effective employee conflict resolution handling

· Review of any criminal behavior of the company or leader

· Utilize internet searches to develop checklist for documented organizational statements to review:

· Company website – information on who the company is and how it started

· Core Values/ Mission Statement

· Review of company policies i.e. Harassment; Zero Tolerance Policy, etc.

· References to scriptures or other statements related to ethics, proper treatment, inspirational messages, etc., on marketing material or company merchandise

· Utilize a survey to gauge servant leadership characteristics across the various shareholders

· Utilize interviews with SMEs who are familiar with global customs, laws, practices, and policies as the criteria for destemming a virtuous organization in different countries may differ slightly as a result

Rank your learning issues in order of importance. Which questions are highest priority and most critical for the team to address first?

1. Establish a consistent methodology for determining the criteria for virtuous leadership.

2. Knowledge creation for the best possible environment and circumstances for virtuous leaders to flourish.

3. Significance of stakeholders and the virtuous leader relationship

4. Identification of cultural behaviors and styles that influence globalized characteristics of virtual leadership.

5. Evaluate and understand the personal challenges of moral and ethical limits.

Which learning issues will be followed up by the whole group and which will be assigned to individuals, who later report their findings to the team?

1. Establish a consistent methodology for determining the criteria for virtuous leadership. (Team Member #1)

2. Knowledge creation for the best possible environment and circumstances for virtuous leaders to flourish. (Team Member #2)

3. Significance of stakeholders and the virtuous leader relationships (Team Member #3)

4. Identification of cultural behaviors and styles that influence globalized characteristics of virtual leadership. (Team Member #3)

5. Evaluate and understand the personal challenges of moral and ethical limits. (Whole group)
