Manny, a 35-year old male has been seeing you for counseling to address substance abuse issues. During the course of his counseling session, Manny shared, "I started drinking following the death of my mother in 2016. At first, it was just a couple of beers that eventually it turned into a six-pack every day. After mom died, I lost my direction in life. I felt hopeless and contemplated whether or not I could move on with my mom. In some ways, the alcohol dulled my pain enough that I did not commit suicide. I thought about it a lot but I would drink a few beers and pass out. My wife is threatening to leave me and take our children so I decided it was time to get some help."
