Note. This image shows the harmful and negative effects of social media on body image. Having these effects, (Comparing Self, Seeking Validation, Struggling with Body Image and Self Confidence, Subconscious Impact and Toxic Culture) “coming out of the phone” onto the female figure’s face, symbolize that these negative impacts distort our perception of ourselves. We cannot fully see ourselves through a lens that isn’t jaded by social media. The first impact, “Comparing Self” is the darkest color and has the thickest lines. The darker the color, and thethicker the line represents the severity of how these effects distort body image. Therefore, from top to bottom, each effect distorts body image a different amount. Comparing the self and seeking validation were the two most prominent ways that social media negatively impacted body image, therefore they are at the top, have darker colors, and thicker lines. Struggling with body image and self-confidence is in the middle because this was exacerbated by social media use and a common effect of social media. Lastly, the subconscious impact of social media and the toxic culture it creates, are still prominent effects of social media's distortion of body image but have less of an impact compared to the other ones, which is why they have thinner lines and lighter colors.
