ASSIGNMENT-3 DATA COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKS

The steps below might assist you to understand what is expected in Assignment 3. This is a typical situation that you would find yourself in if you are in the IT industry. It is called a system upgrade. The requirements step is critical to your design. If you do not understand what the client wants in terms of security, performance the client will not be happy and will not pay you.

This is critical thinking (asking questions such as what does the client need? How do I design a network solution?) and it is important for your training.

Client specification (from Assignment 3)

Before –you are given the diagram above

The company has expanded, and it has decided to redevelop its HQ’s existing LAN (see the above diagram) to achieve the company’s following business and technical goals.

Client wants the following

The Business goals: Improved communications, wireless, VoIP, etc. Protect company information

Technical goals: • Scalability – company plans to increase employee by 15% in next 12 months; • Remote Access- employees have access to company resources from both company and home (different servers); • Performance – network performance must be high • Security – protection of company information and other IT assets • Flexibility- network should be flexible enough to create logical grouping as required. • Availability – wireless network access is available in all employees as well as some outdoor areas for software developers and employees

You are free to make as many assumptions you wish regarding the existing organizational structure including management hierarchy, business requirement, etc. which will need to be documented in the appropriate sections of your report. You are contracted by the company to help with the network redevelopment.

Your task in this assignment is to propose and document

Requirement engineering (The analysis of user requirements for the company HQ’s local area network (LAN))

A logical design for the HQ LAN

An IP address plan for the HQ LAN according to the proposed design

Network diagrams

Marking rubric

Demonstrates full understanding of network needs through a comprehensive analysis of all of the following elements:

• Performance requirements

• Security requirements

• Remote access requirement

• Mobility requirements

• Bandwidth requirement

Quality of Service (QoS) requirement

VoIP Service requirement

After – you make the diagram below

Performance – network performance must be high we used L3 switches as ….

We expect to see No single point of Failure (SPoF) for critical system

Security requirements – Protect company information plus protection of company information and other IT assets

We expect to see DMZ (see page 310 textbook), firewalls, security policy

Remote access Remote Access- employees have access to company resources from both company and home (different servers)

We expect to see wireless and different servers for each section . The company HQ has 6 departments: Software Development, Solution Design, Customer Support, Sales, Finance and Human Resource detailed as follow: see assignment

We expect to see secure solution for remote access =VPN

Mobility Availability – wireless network access is available in all employees as well as some outdoor areas for software developers and employees

Bandwidth requirement

Quality of Service see Mediasite recording

VoIP Service Improved communications, wireless, VoIP,

VoIP Service and Quality of Service see video:  VLAN solution

Critical thinking question.

Did we miss any client requirements? What about scalability? Campus design. Where would we expect to see this design in the marking rubric?
