Replacing Damaged Flooring

Situation: Many homes were damaged in a recent flood. John and Ruth Dennison are fortunate as the damage to their home is limited to the flooring. They have flood insurance that covers 60% of the replacement cost of the flooring.

Problem: Determine the cost to replace the damaged floor.

Other Information:

 A floor plan indicating the water damage is attached  Add 10% to the calculated amount of tile for waste  Tile cost $2.35 per square foot. (1 tile = 1 ft2)

UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM:

Identify what you are trying to find. WRITE THIS DOWN to “own the problem!”

PLAN:

Brainstorm your thoughts and questions. WRITE IT ALL DOWN! Through this process you will identify information that is needed to solve the problem.

CARRY OUT THE PLAN: SOLVE (Show all work)

1. Determine the number of tiles damaged by water.

2. Add 10% to this number for waste.

3. Determine the cost for replacing this number of tiles.

4. How much will the insurance company pay? Actual amount to the nearest penny.

5. How much will the Dennisons pay? Actual amount to the nearest penny.

LOOK BACK EXAMINE the solution: Is your answer reasonable?_____ Explain_______________________________________________________________ Additional Exercises:  What fraction of the total number of tiles were damaged? (Simplify if possible)

 A local store will give you a discount of 10% of the cost of the flooring if your home had at least 20% of the total floor area damaged by the flood. Do the Dennisons qualify for the discount? If yes, how much money will they save?
