Weekly Concept: _Social Science___________________________________

1. Description of Weekly Concept in your own words (3-5 sentences): Social science is the study of society and the people that constitute it. Social science can look at culture, history, economics, etc. Social science is often used to shape government, policy, and society itself.

2. Do you think this concept matters? (1-2 sentences): Social science is deeply important to understanding the world around us. Without it, there would be no political science, no economics, no cultural understanding. And understanding the situations of others around the world makes for a more complete understanding of the humanity in all and the things that connect us. Title of News Article: _Bangladesh court upholds Myanmar Rohingya marriage ban___

Source: _BBC News__________________________________________

Date of Article (should be no more than two weeks old): _8 January 2018____________

3. How does this article relate to the weekly concept? (5-7 sentences):

This article relates to the weekly concept because it is about politics, in particular as it relates to marriage between people of two ethnic and religious groups. In Bangladesh, a young Bangladeshi and a Rohingya married and have been attempting to evade the police. The Rohingya have been forced to flee Myanmar due to ethnic cleansing and genocide (a concept often researched within the social sciences, particularly in political science, history, sociology, and anthropology). The country of Bangladesh has chosen to continue a law that bans Rohingya from marrying Bangladeshi citizens to avoid marriage being used as a means of obtaining citizenship. This relates to social science as it has to do with human rights, including freedom of movement.

4. Why do you think this article is important? What is its significance locally,

nationally, or globally? (5-7 sentences): This article is important because it is yet another example of the struggles and sufferings of the Rohingya. While Bangladesh has been considerate enough to allow the Rohingya into their borders, they are barring them from receiving citizenship even through marriage. It is yet another example of how the Rohingya are not accepted, as their official documents in Myanmar are considered falsified, and they cannot become citizens of Bangladesh either. This is a modern day ethnic cleansing that could easily be considered a genocide, but the global community is remaining mostly silent, allowing the Rohingya to be continually discriminated against. It is important for people everywhere to be aware of this injustice in the hopes that with more awareness will come action to help the Rohingya.

5. Should others read this article? Why or why not? (2-3 sentences): Yes, others should read this article. It is important to be aware of the plight of the Rohingya in the hopes that they can be saved.
