CSP-SM Post-Class Assignment 3
Assignment 3 – Dysfunctions
In class we spent a good deal of time exploring the unhealthy interpersonal behaviors, defined as "Dysfunctions". This is -not- to be confused with a poor implementation of Scrum or a lack of shared understanding of the framework, as these can cross over any way of working with other people.
You filled out a short survey and performed some scoring on a set of behaviors to get an idea of where you felt your team was with respect to these interpersonal behaviors. Each of the behaviors was put forth and the response that you selected was "Usually" (3), "Sometimes" (2), or "Rarely" (3).
In addition to that survey, we explored as a class the importance of the five dysfunctions of a team and the linking of those behaviors using an interlocking puzzle. This puzzle contained the dysfunctions, their relations, and examples of behaviors that you may see with teams who have / avoid that dysfunction.
Reference the questions in the survey file. This is a survey that ONE member of your team will fill out on their own, rather than a group effort. NOTE - you should NOT use the word "dysfunctions" when talking with team members about this assignment. Instead use the term "interpersonal behaviors".
1. Send a copy of the survey to each member of your current team or a team that you have recently worked with. I do -not- recommended doing this with a new team just getting started, as the answers will all be "unsure" and is outside of the spirit of the assignment.
2. Each survey participant should provide a Usually / Sometimes / Rarely answer for each question. They do NOT need to provide a reason for their answer in this exercise.
3. Compile the results of the surveys into the format outlined below. Include the count of each response for each question.

4. Calculate the scores for each of the five dysfunctions using two decimal points.
To calculate the scores: Each dysfunction is associated with three questions. Each question has one of three answers. The scale is:
Usually = 3
Sometimes = 2
Rarely = 1
The questions that correspond to each dysfunction are as follows:
· Absence of Trust - Questions 4, 6, 12
· Fear of Conflict - Questions 1, 7, 10
· Lack of Commitment - Questions 3, 8, 13
· Avoidance of Accountability - Questions 2, 11, 14
· Inattention to results - Questions 5, 9, 15
Here is how to determine the dysfunction score for ONE person for the "Absence of Trust":
Question #4: "usually" = 3
Question #6: "sometimes" = 2
Question #12: "rarely" = 1
3 + 2 + 1 = 6
A score of 8 or 9 is a probable indication that the dysfunction *is not* a problem for your team
A score of 6 or 7 indicates that the dysfunction *could* be a problem
A score of 3 to 5 is probably an indication that the dysfunction *needs* to be addressed
Now assuming a team of five, here is how the dysfunction score for "Absence of Trust" could be calculated:
Team Member #1: 5
Team Member #2: 6
Team Member #3: 8
Team Member #4: 5
Team Member #5: 7
The dysfunction score for the team would be the average of those values:
(5 + 6 + 8 + 5 + 7) / 5 responses = 6.20
This means that this is a dysfunction that *needs* to be addressed and is likely hurting your team. While one response came back as an "8", note that the rest of the responses brought the score down.
NOTE: Do NOT to use the phrase "Dysfunction" when performing this survey as it will very likely impact the responses that you receive.
Based on this data, fill in the following questions:
