Managing Prisons-Best Practices and Policy Reform

I as the assistant warden due to the prisoners that we have just received from a closing

facility due to its corruption. We are a medium facility that houses prisoners which have

committed crimes like theft, fraud, drug sales and manufacturing, arson, and aggravated assault.

The prisoners that were transferred were convicted of more violent crimes which led to the

current prisoners feeling out of place and crowded due to there not being enough space to take

on the new prisoners comfortably. The issues that we are experiencing now because of the

change there is an increase in mental health issues, suicides are higher and now there is a spread

of infectious disease.

I will get with Warden and share with him the idea for the problem that we are currently

experiencing with the arrival of the new prisoners. First, they will need to be separated from the

existing prisoners. The next thing is that I have is that we may need to set up a new structure of

housing for all of the prisoners that will allow for us to be able to separate them according to

their crimes.

Before we could implement any type of changes that we are working on to improve the

conditions of the prison. We need to look at what would be right, legal or the right thing to do in

other words what is ethical (Stohr & Walsh, 2017). Although the new prisoners are considered

more violent than the prisoners that were already there in prison, they still need to be treated the

right way. I think that the issues that are currently going on there would have to do with the

overcrowding that is has happened. If the plan is done and guided by deontological framework

there will be no concern for consequences (Stohr & Walsh, 2017). Kant a philosopher who

believed that people needed something to guide them when it comes to making decisions (Stohr

& Walsh, 2017). Now that there is also an investigative journal that is involved with writing an

article about the current conditions of the prison, we still have to inform her that we have a

utilitarianism obligation to make the decision that is for the greater for all prisoners involved.

Overcrowding is a cause for concern in prisons because of overcrowding not only are the

prisoners suffering but the moral of the staff is low. The security and control of the prison

becomes difficult and probably along with that you may have over worked staff which places

them under tremendous stress. The next problem is the risk of increase health and wellbeing

problems amongst the inmates as well as pose a risk to the staff. Due to overcrowding the norm

problems of the prison are increased because of the increase of the population.

The long-term solution is first those that have committed low level crimes and instead of

just sentencing them to prison time the judge should have the option to use probation for those

offenders and also community service for an alternative and if they do not follow the rules of the

said probation stipulation and community service then being incarcerated is the other option. The

second option is for those that are already incarcerated, and those prisoners are no longer a risk or

danger when released to society should have the option to be released early and placed on parole

for the remaining of their sentence. There are many solutions that could be put in place to rectify

the problems of overcrowding.
