Critique of Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is a kind of study that explores in detail a possible phenomenon or experience. The study involving qualitative research adopts various approaches of grounded theory approach, interpretative phenomenological approach, discourse and finally narrative analysis. In all its aspects of research study, the methodology is expected to be naturalistic in the nature of data collected, have valid response to the research questions, able to generate reliable results and the ability of the research sample to reflect representativeness of the general population. It is therefore the aim of the writer to criticize the sample of the qualitative research on depression conducted by the researcher on dysthymia and panic disorders.

In the qualitative research study sample, the researcher’s choice of research design need to be in conformity to the principles of qualitative research study. Such principles include the concept of being naturalistic in the data collected. This is the art of the research data collected to be prevented against coding, summarization or reduction to avoid loss of the original meaning of such data. From the sample of the qualitative research provided, the researcher never provided a sample of the data collected from the field but gave a generalized conclusion of the data collected.

The research design should also follow the principle of validity of the data provided. The tendency of the researchers to code the data collected brings in the question of the validity of the data collected. The next principle of qualitative research needed to be met is reliability and representativeness. The qualitative research on depression has met the criteria of asking relevant simple questions that are easier to be understood by the respondents. However, the researcher did not give a representative sample used to conduct the research on depression.

The qualitative research on depression was specific on dysthymia and panic disorders. From the findings by the researcher, both dysthymia and panic disorder are both chronic diseases that are long term in nature. The research involved the use of 14 dysthymia patients and 9 panic disorder patients from Stockholm, Sweden. The dysthymia patients were aged between 34 and 68 years while the panic disorder patients were aged between 32 and 51 years old. The respondents were picked based on the criteria that they were patients of either dysthymia or panic disorder and that the illness had affected them for more than two years. The sampling strategy employed was specific to the patients who had been taken care under the natural treatment program in the years between 1992 and 1996.

The qualitative research was such that qualitative methods were used in data collection. The researcher then utilized sampling method to select the best among the collected data. This was done with the consideration of the areas largely affected by the cases of dysthymia. To get feedback on the qualitative research questions of the study, the researcher evaluated the patients using diagnostic assessment with support of intensive interviews to understand the opinion of the sample group regarding the study.

The data was collected through a narrative interview by a renowned psychiatrist in behavioral therapy. The interview employed open -ended questions which paved way to an interesting conversation. The process included questions like ‘How are you? Are you feeling well?’ ‘How long have you received treatment?’ ‘What has been helpful?’ and finally ‘ Have you changed?’.

The researcher adopted the assessment method of the first author and the psychiatric 90 symptom checklist were used for reassessment. The researcher conducted this research as a justification of the average total score of Global Severity Index (GSI) to determine the extent of mental disorder. The research allowed for a six month remission, follow up and successful recovery as well as partial recovery of the participants. The test showed that the participants showed slim signs of being depressed or mentally challenged. This finding shows the inability of the researcher to rightly pick the right participants for the study.

In conclusion of the study, the researcher is proposing for the generalized treatment approach to dysthymia and panic disorder patients entailed in four aspects. The first aspect involve understanding self and illness mechanism. Secondly, the researcher advocated for openness of thought. Thirdly, the researcher advocated for a change in tackling the health issues. Finally, the researcher pointed out the importance of differentiating between the early onset dysthymia and secondary depressions.

According to the qualitative research, the researcher has showed the reflexivity in the study on depression. Reflexivity is a concept that helped the researcher to have a foreground of the research and influence the process of the research on depression to prove the hypothesis of the study.

The researcher of the qualitative study on depression however was biased on meeting the representativeness of the data collected. The researcher was biased in using the sample from a single city in Sweden to make a general conclusion regarding the patients of depression.

Finally, a well articulated qualitative research ought to follow the ethics of research. Such ethics considered while protecting the privacy of the participants include; firstly, informed consent of participants about the research. Secondly, no deception of participants. Thirdly, every participant has the right to withdraw. Fourthly, participants are entitled to debriefing. Finally, the researcher should maintain confidentiality of the participants. Since there were no complaints captured within the research sample, it is assumed that the researcher considered the ethics.
