CommArts Online • IDS 3336 – Creative Expression in a Global Society

Creative Engagement Project (20 Points Total): The purpose of this assignment is for you to experience art as a way to engage people around issues of global concern. You must plan and execute an art project that uses art to engage people in a public way in order to make a positive difference about an issue of global concern. You will do this project yourself, but you will be assigned a to a groups of 4 people who will review your project proposal and make suggestions before you submit it (this is not mandatory, rather is it encouraged to keep you engaged with your classmates). Your art can be web-based, a public performance, a work of art that you create and arrange to exhibit somewhere publicly accessible, a public music performance, etc. There are 2 major components to the project:

1. (5 Points) Your must submit a 2 page proposal for you project. The proposal you submit (via Blackboard) must:

a. describe what you plan to do b. explain how your project will:

i. address an important issue of global significance ii. use art to make a positive difference about the issue and

iii. engage the issue in a public way c. include a creative statement describing how you expect the symbols, images

and/or forms of the project to meaningfully engage the people and ideas relevant to your project.

d. include the draft you submitted to your group members for peer review AND the reviews/suggestions sent to you by your group members.

Although your project may take unexpected turns you MAY NOT completely change your topic without permission from your instructor

2. (15 Points) You must complete the project submit your result to the assignment drop box. Your presentation must include:

a. A clear but brief summary of what you did and how it met the requirements of the assignment (address an important issue of global significance using art to make a positive difference and engage the issue in a public way).

b. A brief evaluation discussing 1) how the project went 2) it's artistic value and 3) it's impact.

c. Documentation that shows what you did. This documentation might display a web page or online blog featuring your project, a video or photos of what you did, etc. AND

d. In what way do you think the final project met the requirements of the assignment: 1) using art to 2) publicly engage 3) a significant global issue?

e. Overall, what do you think is most effective about the project? f. What recommendations would you make for improving the project?
