Cultural Immersion Experience
Walden University COUN 6723/COUN 6312S: Multicultural Counseling
Week 9 Counselors are advocates and agents of change, impacting client’s lives at the interpersonal, intrapersonal, community, organizational, and societal level. Advocacy is central to ethical, competent practice as a counselor.
Your Cultural Immersion Experience offers you the opportunity to consider how you might advocate with or on behalf of the group you worked with. Consider the following image:
How might the image on the left, or image A, be different from the image on the right, or image B?
Image A shows three people watching a baseball game with a fence in front of them. One person is tall, one is middle height, and the third person is shorter. Each person is standing on a box of the same height. The tall person can see the game easily, the middle person can just peer over the fence, and the shorter person can’t see the game at all.
In Image B, the tall person is not standing on a box and can still peer over the fence. The middle person is still standing on one box and can just see over the fence. The shorter person is standing on two boxes and can see over the fence now, as well.
These two images are a beautiful analogy for social justice and advocacy.
Consider how Image A might represent privilege, unintentional injustice, and equality (the same distribution of resources). The article by Crethar, Rivera, and Nash addresses social justice counseling to include equity, access, participation, and harmony. Equity is fair distribution of resources, rights, and responsibilities.
Consider how Image B might represent equity. Counselors promote systemic change and advocacy throughout various levels. How might this image relate to your Cultural Immersion experience?

Final Project: Cultural Immersion Experience Review all of the required materials under Learning Resources. Review directions for the week’s Assignment as well as for the entire module.
Part of your aspirational journey to continuing to expand upon your understanding of cultural competence and humility is to immerse yourself in a culturally diverse experience, event, and/or ceremony. Immersion provides us with the ability to step outside of our comfort zone and become fully present and engaged with those who are unlike ourselves.
Directions for Assignment:
For the Cultural Immersion Experience Assignment, you are required to engage in a culturally diverse experience, event, and/or ceremony for at least 90 minutes related to the following topics: poverty, gender, sexual/affectional orientation, race/ethnicity, spirituality/religion, advocacy, and/or social justice. You will have the option to attend an event (i.e., a religious ceremony, volunteering at a shelter or soup kitchen). If you are unable to find an experience, event, and/or ceremony, reach out to your Instructor by Week 5 for assistance with other options.
This activity is geared toward getting you out of your comfort zone and encouraging you to engage in something different and new that may open your eyes to a cultural experience, ceremony, or event that may help you become a more sensitive and culturally aware counselor. Additionally, consider how this experience inspires you to consider advocating for social justice.

Note: The approximate length of this media piece is 61 minutes.
Events cannot be based on personal group engagement/involvement or personal family or connection. After you attend the cultural immersion event, you will have the option to either write a 4- to 6-page scholarly paper or submit a 15-to-20-minute video presentation. As an alternative, you may also select to submit a paper/video combination including a 2–4-page paper AND 7–10-minute video presentation.
Papers and videos also must reference include a minimum of four (4) scholarly research articles to illustrate points. Additional resources are welcome but do not count towards your minimum of four scholarly articles. Two of your resources may come from the Learning Resources provided in the class but at least two must be found independently from the Walden Library.
All papers must be written according to the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Publication Manual (i.e., proper title page, 12-font, double spaced, page numbers, headings, conclusion section, properly formatted Reference page, date, and time the event took place, etc.).
By Day 7 of Week 9
Select one of the following options for your final project.
Option I: Written Paper
Write a 4–6-page paper that contains the following using in-depth, self-reflective responses:
Description of the experience, event, ceremony, etc. Why did you choose this experience? How has this experience impacted you emotionally? Describe at least two ways in which this experience has impacted your ability to encompass cultural competence in counseling. Describe at least two ways in which this experience has impacted your ability to encompass cultural humility professionally. Discuss at least two ways in how this experience changed your worldview related to oppression, discrimination, power, or privilege. Discuss how you could infuse social justice advocacy in your work as a counselor, based on your cultural immersion experience. Consider advocacy based on the environment you plan to work in (i.e., community mental health, school, private practice, etc.). For example, if you chose to attend a LGBTQ+ Pride Festival and you are a school counselor, you might consider starting a Gender and Sexualities Alliance (GSA) or a Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) at the school you work for. Or, if you chose to volunteer at a homeless shelter and are a mental health counselor, you might consider advocating for low-income housing.
Option 2: Video Presentation
Post a 15-to-20-minute video based on the following:
Describe the experience, event, or ceremony you chose to attend. Share why you chose this experience. How did the experience impact you emotionally? Describe at least two ways in which this experience has impacted your ability to encompass cultural competence in counseling. Describe at least two ways in which this experience has impacted your ability to encompass cultural humility professionally. Discuss how this experience changed your worldview related to barriers, prejudices, oppression, and/or discrimination. Share an idea of how you could potentially infuse social justice advocacy in your work as an emerging counselor if you were working with the community you spent time with for the cultural immersion experience.
You are encouraged to come up with an outline or PowerPoint for your video. You are welcome to be creative! Feel free to reach out to your instructor with any questions.
Option 3: Combined Written Paper and Video Presentation
Post a 7-to-10-minute video based on the following:
Describe the experience, event, or ceremony you chose to attend. Share why you chose this experience. How did the experience impact you emotionally? Describe at least two ways in which this experience has impacted your ability to encompass cultural competence in counseling. Describe at least two ways in which this experience has impacted your ability to encompass cultural humility professionally.

You are encouraged to take the Quiz once without having any resources available. This will help prepare you to take the National Counselor Examination. You are allowed to take the Quiz up to three times with the highest score as your final score.
This Quiz consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. Each question is worth 0.5 points. Questions are presented in a random order. You may use your course readings and other resources to help you.
