Telling a story
Objectives
● Review elements and the structure of a narrative. ● Identify the elements of a narrative in the story
Drunkard by the River. ● Write a draft narrative.
General Instructions ● This presentation will be used to guide you in completing two graded activities
during the Easter break. ● Review all information before completing each graded activity. ● For Activity 1 you will be required to read the story given by the teacher and
identify specific elements of that story. ● For Activity 2 you will be required to write a draft of a story. You must present
this draft on the first week of school so your teacher can review it, ● After the review, you will edit your story and submit it to be graded.
Planning your narrative (graphic organizer) 1. Examine the prompt and think about what you want to write about. 2. Set the scene (who, what , when and where). 3. Write down the problem/conflict. 4. Outline the sequence of events. 5. State the conflict. 6. Write down the resolution.
NOTE: Your plan should not exceed 15 minutes.
Key elements of a narrative - Setting - Plot (Introduction - rising action - climax - falling action -
conclusion) - Characters - Point of view - mood/atmosphere - Literary devices
Outline Paragraph 1 - describe the setting, introduce the main character, begin story (you can also give a brief background of who the character is or the character’s current situation)
Paragraph 2 - build suspense and create the rising action
Paragraph 3 - continue the rising action and end with the climax
Paragraph 4 - falling action
Paragraph 5 - conclusion
Grade Activity 1 (13 marks) ● Read the extract “Drunkard of the River” ● You are NOT required to answer the questions found at the end of the story. ● You are required to identify the following elements of that story. 1. Narrative point of view ( 2marks) 2. Conflict of the story (2 marks) 3. Write a brief character sketch of any two of the following characters:
Sona Mano The Mother (3 marks each)
4. Identify the climax of the story? (2 marks)
5. What did you think happen to Mano? (2 marks)
6. What aspects of the plot did you enjoy the most? (1 mark)
7. Is there any aspect of the plot you would change? (1 mark)
Activity 2- Write a story based on one of the following: 1. Write a story including the following lines:
“In the end I had no one to blame but myself”
2. Write a story based on the picture.
Instructions Your answer should be approximately 400 to 450 words in length.
You MUST write in Standard English. However, dialect may be used in conversation. You are expected to write within the word limit.
In your answer, you will be assessed on how well you
(a) used the stimulus provided
(b) developed and organized the content of your writing
(c) used language appropriate to your audience, purpose and content
(d) used appropriate grammar, sentence structure, paragraphs, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.
