What is a Control Plan?

A written summary description of the system for controlling processes

It identifies and provides information to manage: Measuring, monitoring, and control of the key process metrics.

Transition Planning

IIL-LSSGB

The control plan provides a written summary description of the system for controlling parts and processes.

The control plan is used to minimize process and product variation.

The control plan describes the actions that are required at each phase of the process –including receiving, in-process, final assembly, and shipping – to assure that all process outputs will be in a state of control. A control plan for operational actions such as ordering, order taking, invoicing, billing, etc. can also be utilized for transactional operations.

The control plan does not replace the information contained in detailed operator instructions. Since processes are expected to be continually updated and improved, the control plan is a living document, reflecting the current methods of control and measurement systems used.

The Control Plan tells leaders how to react to process problems as they occur. It also focuses on early detection and prevention of process problems before they occur.

Purpose of Control Plan

Maintains process performance to satisfy customers’ needs

Monitor process variation

Aids in timely troubleshooting of processes

Holds the gains achieved by improvement activities

Drives ongoing process performance improvement

Questions to Ask for Control Plan

Control Metrics

What metrics are you tracking going forward?

Are you tracking X’s as well as the Y?

How are they defined?

Does the frequency of data collection allow for timely intervention of the process?

Control Charts

Are you using Control Charts to monitor the process?

Has the process owner been trained on how to manage using control charts?

Reaction Plan

Who is responsible to take action if the process is out of control?

What actions are planned if the process is out of control?
