He later shot and killed 45-year-old art teacher Ruth Sturgeon, with whom he'd been in conflict, fatally wounding her in the chest and, following an intense struggle, 35-year-old mechanical arts teacher Verner V. Vanderlip, another with whom he had a grievance. Spencer was cornered by police as he attempted to escape through the school cafeteria; as one officer aimed, Spencer pressed the .22 caliber automatic pistol against his right side and fired twice, critically wounding himself. Butler then drove to a parking lot and shot himself as police cornered him Butler, the son of an Omaha Police detective, was called out of class to speak with Kaspar shortly after the Wednesday morning session began, apparently to discuss a criminal trespass citation he received on New Year's Day for driving his vehicle on the school's track and football field. An hour and 15 minutes later, a security guard escorted Butler out of the building, but he returned 3 1/2 hours later and signed in to speak with Kaspar. Tierney said police believe he was in her office for about four minutes before he shot Kaspar and Case. An unarmed security officer, after hearing the gunshots, recognized Butler as he walked out. At first, he put the clip in one pocket and the gun in the other but the clip was slipping so he put it in the gun. Shooter had told 2 other students about the gun and they got scared he would do something because of the way he had been feeling so one of them warned another student and she panicked. Shooter had taken a large dose of Adderall the night before and the anxiety kept building up, he panicked and blacked out, that is when the shooting happened. 2 students shot, 2 injured by either fragments or other. Shooter was on the wrestling team, both students shot were also on the wrestling team. Shooter had no previous behavioral issues.
