CONDENSED VERSION of Syllabus for Eastern/ Asian/ Philosophy. Textbook: Asian Philosophy; Philosophical Classics Vol. VI. Baird, Heimbeck (eds.); Prentice Hall.

Requirements:

Reading Summaries/Discussion posts: You will submit weekly summaries of our readings in the drop box as well as regularly post on the discussion boards. Your summaries will be graded on how concisely, accurately, and fully they capture the major points of each reading. For each discussion board that is set up you will be required to post your own thoughts on the particular topic identified as well as at least one response to a peers thoughts on that topic. The discussion board topics will be derived from supplementary readings that will be made available on in the “contents” section). Your postings should show an understanding of the relevant supplementary reading as well as a reasonably distinct and deep point of view. Simply summarizing the points of others or asserting that you agree with what someone has already posted will not be adequate.

Exam and essay: You will have one written, essay based exam. In the exam, you will be required to explain different philosophical theories we will explore as well as discuss particular problems for them. You will also be required to write an argument essay. In the essay(s) you will be expected to develop a position related to an issue we explore in this course Potential essay topics will be made available. The exams will be essay based and require you to explain, through writing, different philosophical theories and problems they encounter. A study sheet for the exam will be posted.
