The Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against Women

This policy resolved that the American bar association should ratify and reaffirm its support for the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against women; this was in a move to ensure equal opportunities between men and women in the American society. In a further resolution, the American Bar Association was asked to support the development of individual right petitions as an optional protocol.

Since criminal justice policies are meant to provide direction to the legislators, I believe this policy got chosen with a particular intention. For decades women in the United States of America have not received equal opportunities as compared to the men, and many cases of discrimination against women have gotten reported. This type of bias gets termed as gender discrimination. However, this definition should not be taken out of context to mean both genders as this paper seeks to address mainly the discrimination against women and girls. Statistics show that over 42 percent of working women in the United States of America is believed to have faced at least one form of gender-based discrimination, and this goes a long way to prove that gender-based discrimination is one of the biggest issues facing both working and non-working women in the United States of America.

Gender-based violence occurs in various forms ranging from sexual harassment, getting lesser pay as compared to their male counterparts, getting fewer promotions as compared to their male workmates. However, of all the types of gender-based discrimination, sexual based harassment is the most common. The masculine gender would want sexual favors from women to give them positions of influence or in return for employment and this gets considered as a form of gender-based harassment and discrimination. Employing women in work that requires them to have a certain type of dressing code is also a form of discrimination.

One of the issues corresponding with this policy is the issue of racism. Racism can get defined as discriminating of an individual based on the color of their skin. The African Americans, in particular, have faced the issue of racism in the United States over a very long period; such has been the case that some lobby groups claim the police and other government officials have treated to treat

Black Americans to a different standard as compared to how the white population gets treated. However, this should not imply that racism is an issue of only Black Americans in America because people of different races have their own story to say. Latinos and Mexicans for example have come out in the past to claim that they have undergone racial profiling before.

Racism is demeaning and discriminatory, there have been several cases reported of people who have gone to the level of taking their own life after undergoing an act of racial discrimination ("Discrimination: What , and how to cope," 2019). Therefore, this is an issue of great importance and should get considered while formulating policies that should get used in the determination of cases.

People who are discriminated against tend to suffer several mental conditions resulting from the same. Some of the challenges that arise from discrimination may cause an effect on the mental health of the affected person, and may even result in increased levels of stress. This according to me is a similar issue that should get dealt with; the judicial service should take into consideration the importance of mental health ("Discrimination: What it is, and how to cope," 2019). The government over time has faced the consequences of ignoring the mental wellbeing of its citizens with cases of mass shootings and suicides being on the rise. Therefore a lot of attention has to be paid to ensure that discrimination against women and any other person gets done away with.

In conclusion, discrimination against women is an issue that has faced the United States and other countries over a long period, this is due to the nature of laws and traditions practiced in different parts of the world. This policy is meant to reduce the harsh results that come from this discrimination, and by doing this gives women equal chances at the opportunities presented to them in life. The policy should be encouraged, and many other systems should get put in place for the benefit of the categories mentioned above of people.
