Instructions: Read through the essay twice. The first time read it for enjoyment, like you would read any essay. The second time, read for the essentials we discussed in class. Then, please answer the following questions as completely as possible. Do not just give the paper and writer the stamp of approval, or a "yes" or "no" answer - you will be doing your partner a disservice. You will turn these peer reviews when you turn in your revised essay next week.

ATTENTION: Does the writer get your attention in the first paragraph? What did they use to get your attention? Rhetorical Question? Anecdote? Quote? Surprising Fact? How could they improve the first paragraph?

PURPOSE: What is the claim? Is it clear? Is it focused, or is it too broad? How could it be improved?

REFERENCES/CITATIONS: Do they have strong sources, including at least one Academic Journal? Do they include a source that articulates a counter-claim? Are sources cited each time they are used? Check MLA format, including in-text citations and works cited page.

THEY SAY, I SAY: Are the authors introduced and authority established? Do they practice They Say I Say technique (also called Sandwich Method)? Is it clear when the student is speaking and when the source is speaking?

CLARITY: Is the essay clear? Is it easy to follow? Is it cohesive? Are there good transitions from one point to the next? Suggestions for improvement?

Recurring mechanical problems? Grammar, punctuation, spelling?

What is your overall impression of the essay? What did the author do especially well? What do you like about it? Suggestions for improvement?
