RTI
Directions: Create a list, with a partner or group, explaining the benefits and disadvantages of RTII/MTSS compared to the Discrepancy Model. One person from each pair or group needs to complete the graphic organizers and upload them to D2L. We will discuss your ideas as a class; therefore, be prepared to share. Also, you are encouraged to use this information to help “assume your position” for the position paper.
Response to Instruction and Intervention/Multi-tiered Instruction and Support:
BENEFITS |
DISADVANTAGES |
· Identifies at-risk students early · Provides meaningful instruction to at-risk students · Targeted and individualized for certain students using evidence-based instruction · Evaluated on an individual basis · Indicates skill levels relative to peers, success or lack of success for intervention · Structural supports for students · Increase experience for teacher · Designed to address students with achievement problems so that they are not identified with “learning disability” · Multiple measures of the child’s performance · Emphasizes the instructional needs
· Only looks at reading level of students · Only targets students that are below grade level · One important component but not the only one
Discrepancy Model:
BENEFITS |
DISADVANTAGES |
· Fails to differentiate between children who have LD and those who have academic achievement problems related to poor instruction · Discriminate between certain groups of students outside of “mainstream” · Do not predict which students will benefit from or respond differently to instruction · Requires students to fail for a long period of time before they exhibit a discrepancy
