A theory is “a belief, policy, or procedure proposed or followed as the basis of action”, and nursing theory “is an organized framework of concepts and purposes designed to guide the practice of nursing” (Petiprin, 2016, p.1). The formulation of theories has shaped how students and healthcare workers perceive the ill individual and perhaps provides the best care, and one nursing theory and non-nursing theory that has emerged throughout the years is Betty Neuman system theory and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.  The system theory guides practitioners to consider the patients environment through the process of treatment in other to prevent stress, and asked that “if stress is not prevented then the nurse” or the practitioner “should protect the client’s basic structure and obtain or maintain a maximum level of wellness” (Olin, 2011, p.1). According to Maslow “people are motivated to achieve certain needs and that some needs take precedence over others.  Our most basic need is for physical survival, and this will be the first thing that motivates our behavior” (McLeod, 2007, p.2).

Two practitioners can bring these separate theories together when both agree to work collaboratively with each other to make decisions that benefit only patients. These means, the practitioners will have to involve all team members especially nurses, possibly educates them about the health needs of the patients to ensure that patients living environments are safe.  Butts and Rich (2018) defined nursing as “a practice profession whose science and body of knowledge depend on its perspective” (p.67).  Upon assessment of patients, practitioners are required to provide care base on every individual need. Therefore, it is important that both practitioners ensure that patients are receiving services that add values of high quality and that services are affecting patient’s health outcomes positively and it minimizes health care costs (Yoder-Wise, 2015). That is, the safety needs for every human being must be first considered, and looked into when providing care because when the patients feel safe in their environment, they will be able to move to next level of continuing care.
